  3. Supply Network Shannon (SNS) “ SNS is an industry ‐ led initiative aimed at representing, promoting, developing and connecting together Sub supply companies in the Shannon Region of Ireland.”

  4. • Management Systems • ISO9001 ‐ Quality • ISO 13485 – Medical Devices • AS 9100 – Aerospace • ISO 14001 ‐ Environment • ISO393 ‐ Energy Management • ISO 14064 – Carbon Footprint • OHSAS 18001 ‐ Health and Safety • ISO 27001 ‐ Information Systems • Strategy and Business planning • Lean, 6 Sigma • Project Management • Collaborative networks • Renewable Energy Training • eLearning and web tools

  5. The Trigger A study on Competitiveness, Innovation and Sustainability was conducted by SNS in early 2005 highlighting that : “ Companies need to look at waste reduction and develop new environmental techniques and improved housekeeping practices”.

  7. Variety of Tools Used

  8. Reductions achieved through WEM

  9. Energy Energy champions Motion sensors Reducing thermostat settings Removal of mobile electrical heaters where possible Awareness signs and campaign Machine running hours Change to a supplier of renewable sources of electricity.

  10. Waste Reduce, reuse, recycle programmes Production waste segregation Print settings Waste exchange Canteen and office waste recycling schemes Better Awareness Better labelling on recycling bins

  11. Findings Energy Performance Indicator - % of companies Poor 33% 50% 65% Good 57% Acceptable 10% 80% 85% 41%

  12. Implemented improvements Approximately 20 tonnes of waste metals from landfill per annum and revenue generated Energy saving of over 13% in kwh usage 38% decrease in landfill bound waste 39% companies implemented canteen and office waste recycling schemes 93% companies registered on the LCEA Energy Management Certification Scheme in association with NSAI.

  13. Other Benefits 50% of companies would not have reviewed waste and energy streams Companies’ pallet numbers were recorded and where possible an exchange scheme was set up Anti ‐ static bags exchange developed Energy champions appointed in several companies to encourage and promote energy efficiency amongst their staff.

  14. Dissemination

  15. Significant Obstacles • The collection of data • money /units • Inflexible tools • Recommendations • General / specific • Time constraints • No training

  16. Conclusions Quantities of waste generated and energy used not monitored Lack of awareness about waste disposal / return options Energy use of appliances on standby not recognised The use of an existing network saved time and cost A more comprehensive data set would result in more accurate reporting

  17. Renewable Energy Skills Established in 2004 Provide training and support to trades and professionals in the renewable energy sector. FETAC registered training provider SEI/REIA approved training.

  18. Network Objectives • Promote the concept of using renewable energy as an preferable means of heating buildings • Training in renewable energy heating systems • National standards development • Expert and impartial source of information and support

  19. Synergy

  20. Training Activity 2008 Course Certified Non Certified Solar 821 Heat pump 212 Biomass 176 BER 9 Practical Solar 19 1218

  21. Last Qualification

  22. Trainee Age Profile

  23. Business Networks Synergy Open learning Economies of scale Faster learning curve for all Achieve common goals Share common problems Networking Community builder I am passionate about networks
