Qualifications for the National Honor Society (cont’d) � Character – Takes criticism and accepts recommendations well, cheerful, friendly, ethical, cooperative, honest, courteous, positive approach to life � Service – Voluntarily participates in school, church, and social activities that promote the over-all welfare of the community, willing to work in the background, shows courtesy and willingness to help others
Application Process � Applications are due Monday, March 2, at 3:00 pm. � All applications should be submitted directly to Mrs. Reinhart in C-101. � Two copies required : hard copy and electronic copy (submitted via e-mail)
Formatting your “e-copy” � You should download an application from the Nicolet NHS website. You can choose from three different formats: .doc (PC Word), .docx (Mac Word), or .rtf (any other word processing program). � Save your application with the title lastname_firstname.doc (Ex: nicolet_jean.doc) � E-mail your completed application to lori.reinhart@nicolet.us � USE YOUR SCHOOL E-MAIL! Submissions from other e-mail accounts risk being trapped in the spam filter!
Filling out the application � Six sections: � Co-Curricular Activities – clubs, etc. � Leadership – activities that show you can take control of situations and responsibility for outcomes � Service/Community – things you do to help around the community � Work – things for which you earn money � Honors – accolades, awards, and recognitions � Essay � Each activity listed may be used for only one category � DO YOUR BEST NOT TO LEAVE A CATEGORY BLANK!
Filling out the application (cont’d) � Lack of leadership examples is the most frequent reason given for denial of membership. � Many service activities also fit under “Leadership” – decide where it works best to balance your application! � All teachers will have an opportunity to comment on all applicants
The Essay � Must be saved as a part of your application � Use it to highlight your accomplishments � Should be 3-5 paragraphs in length � Should be polished, professional, well-written and formal in tone (with attention to grammar and spelling) � Be sure to address any weaknesses or gaps in your application (for example: “I don’t have any work experience because my family felt it was important for me to focus on my school work.”) � Proof it Proof it s sev everal t eral times imes! NHS Selection Committee � The NHS Selection Committee consists of five anonymous teachers, chosen by the Principal. � The Committee will read EACH individual application, and consider the comments made about the applicants by ALL of their teachers. � The Committee votes on each applicant; those applicants with a majority vote are accepted. � The faculty advisor has no input into the selection process, and cannot override the Selection Committee. � Applicants who are not accepted may appeal to the Principal, whose only responsibility is to make sure the selection process was “ not conducted in an arbitrary or capricious manner and that the student's materials were reviewed and voted upon .”
Application Process Re-cap � Applications due on: Monday, March 2 nd by 3:00 pm. � The Selection Committee will meet in: mid-March � You should be notified via mail by: March 27 � Induction Ceremony will be held: mid-April (date to be determined) .
Remember . . . Getting in to the National Honor Society is supposed to be difficult! It is a National Honor Society – the standards and expectations of the Selection Committee are high! Most applicants do NOT get accepted! [Last year – 47% of applicants were accepted.]
Requirements AFTER acceptance into the National Honor Society � 24 service hours by May 1 of the next school year (5 service hours must be for Nicolet High School activities) � Participation in at least one Nicolet National Honor Society group service activity � Attendance at ALL National Honor Society meetings (held the third Friday of each month, 6:45-7:15 a.m. ) unless excused from school for the same day
