  1. Improving Healthcare Worker Immunization Lyn Fabricius, Director Infection Control Extendicare (Canada) Inc. & Emmy Hartmann Assistant Director of Care, Extendicare Halton Hills

  2. National Campaign Why we started? - Our National 2009/2010 Immunization results were 62% - We didn’t feel as though this was meeting our mission and vision of ‘Helping People Live Better’ - H1N1 hype in 2009/2010 caused confusion and caused a drop in our staff immunization rates

  3. 2010/2011 National Campaign • Set a goal @ 80% Staff Immunization Across Canada • Created packages for homes – Posters – Thermometers – Stickers – Letter from our VP, Quality • Weekly Communication – Educational Materials – Jokes/Comics – News Articles

  4. Results from Year 1 • Senior Management provided support • Homes became competitive • Homes rose to the challenge • We immunized 80% of staff across Canada • 55 Homes immunized at least 80% of staff • A sense of pride could be seen • This initiative was seen as a vital part of providing residents with a safe environment

  5. Recognizing Success! • As homes reached the 80% goal they were noted in our weekly national communications • All homes that reached the 80% goal or were the most improved in their respective region were recognized with a plaque

  6. Extendicare Halton Hills – Leading the Way • 2010/2011 – 44% • 2011/2012 – 78% • 2012/2013 – 91%

  7. Halton Hills - Our 2012/2013 Journey • 2012/2013 • Management team buy-in • Created an AIM: • Our ’Bug free journey’ goal of having 141/166 (85%) staff vaccinated by November 15,2012 • How? – Educate Staff: Sept 15 th held an education session with our local Public Health Inspector; provided staff with flu fact sheets. – Preparation Work-Up on Documentation: Resident List/ Staff List, Medical Directives/Physician’s Orders/Supplies on Hand. – Leadership in the home – all managers get their shot starting with the Administrator to send a good example. • Updated staff on numbers frequently; on average every 2 days throughout the journey. • Each manager was given accountability for their staff immunization, including following up on status. • Had staff lists with contact information in order to call them at home to contact them and find out what barriers are present in receipt of flu shot (ie medical reason, religious/cultural beliefs).- ACCOUNTABILITY • Assigned a Registered Staff member to come in on days and evenings to increase accessibility.

  9. Success Starts with Leadership

  10. Challenges/Improvements • Improvements in the year 2012-2013 compared to previous: • Staff Lists • Coordinating Clinics –mobile and extra RPN. • Education and more education: Some staff didn’t want to put “that stuff” in their body – educated to combat their preconceived ideas. • Charge Nurses or more senior nurses against vaccine – they can become verbal and send that message to frontline staff: difficult conversations. • Challenges that will lead to change for 2013-2014: • Private Care Staff: Better tracking of their numbers in the home; even if we do not count them as staff-if due to an outbreak and they would like to come in, we need proof of immunization.

  11. Celebrated SUCCESS • Pizza Party to celebrate reaching our goal. • Our 141st staff that brought us to 85% on November 14th 2012.
