Three Types of District 2 Middle Schools Zoned Screened Limited Unscreened (since 2008) MS 297 Most IS 276 (Morton St.) District 2 Middle IS 397 MS 104 Schools Quest 2 Learn (Baruch) MS 167 Yorkville East (Wagner) MS
Screened Middle Schools Ø Most District 2 middle schools are screened school s. o They evaluate applicants; this means they may test and/or interview applicants. Ø Schools rank students based on a range of academic criteria: o Criteria can include interviews, student work, and the middle school’s screening test. o Each middle school creates their own rubric for comparing students. o Screened schools will place the most weight on their own criteria. Ø Screened schools are now blind to every applicant’s ranking for their school. The application information they do have access to includes: o Fourth grade test scores and end of year grades. o Days Absent and Late (4 th grade year - 2017-2018). o Fifth Grade Teachers evaluation of academic and personal behavior.
Limited Unscreened Middle Schools Ø New schools that opened since 2008 are Limited Unscreened schools (Quest 2 Learn, IS 276, Spruce Street School, City Knoll, Yorkville East MS in District 2). Ø Quest 2 Learn, City Knoll, Yorkville East o You must attend a tour or open house to get a priority at the school Ø IS 276 and Spruce Street School (PS 397) o You must attend a tour or open house to to get a priority at the school o IS 276 and Spruce Street will give first priority to their current fifth graders. o They will give second priority to those living in their zone but not attending their school. Ø Limited Unscreened schools see a student ’ s name, their elementary school, and whether they attended a tour or open house not academic information.
Eligibility and Priorities Ø All District 2 Schools now have blind ranking. They will not see how you listed them but you should list in your preferred priority order. Ø Zoned Middle Schools: If you rank your zoned school, you will be given priority at that school. Ø All families are also eligible to apply to competitive city-wide programs (e.g.,ICE, Anderson, Special Music School, PPAS). Ø All schools (district, zoned and citywide) now appear on the middle school application and you will only be matched to one of your choices.
Middle School Application Resources Ø The Middle School Directory is a great resource for what options exist for District 2 students as is the new myschools.nyc portal o It includes a brief description, contact information, enrollment information, and selection criteria for each middle school. o Each school ’ s description also indicates the number of seats in comparison to number of applicants for the 2016-2016 year. o This book is also available online: http://schools.nyc.gov/ChoicesEnrollment/Middle/Resources/ default.htm o Continue to check middle school websites for updates to tours and open houses. o Please consider travel distance when ranking schools on the application. There is no sibling priority for middle school.
Applications Ø This is the first year that the applications are being completed online. Ø In October families will receive notification via mail on how to set up their new account on myschools.nyc Ø Student Information and Academic Information are automatically on the application based on information in STARS for you to view. Ø Only screened schools will see the academic portion of the application. Zoned and unscreened do not have access to this information. Ø If you have moved out of D2, schools from both districts will be listed on the application as choices.
