My Introduction to Design
Bincho by Loh Lik Peng Designer: Hjgher '...a concept that not only preserves history and tradition but introduces a modern approach at the same time.' which reflects 'not just in the cuisine but as the personality of the restaurant too' Pertamina Energy Tower Designer: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP 'a city within a city with vibrant public spaces and communal meeting areas'
Shenzen Bao'an International Airport Designer: Massimiliano and Doriana Using a manta ray as the inspiration, the architects imagined the project 'like a living fish. A manta ray that breathes, changes shape, that flexes, varies, taking light, releasing light, filtering it inside. With a double skin – the external one and the internal one – that inside changes. Robinsons Orchard Designer: designphase dba 'define the departmental shopping experience in Singapore through reinterpretation and contemporising traditional ‘archetypal’ design elements and ‘remixing’ them with new edgy lifestyle influences'
Element Cafe Designer: designphase dba ‘reminiscent of a traditional provision shop, albeit polished and refined’ Tippling Club Designer: greyMatters ‘emphasis on quirkiness extends throughout the space’
Google's Kuala Lumpur Office Designer: M Moser Associates ‘eclectic mix of old and new, used a lot of different elements that relate specifically to Malaysia, but in an abstract way’ Realys Singapore Shophouse Office Designer: Realys A reminiscient feeling of an old 'Traditional Chinese Medicine emporium'
Cultural hybridization Throughout the course, after looking at the design projects. I have come to discover that historical Asian design is the more easily recognisable form of Asian design, and is usually what is mostly attributed to as Asian design, due to its distinct style. While with modern Asian design, with its accumulation of standardised modern technology and material to reach ‘modernity’, the designs deviate from traditional Asian design that was ‘defined long ago, a thing of the past’. With each design can be completely different from the previous, it makes it harder to attribute the designs to a specific culture. “should it only rely on the visual, or must it also encompass the philosophical?” (Leong & Clark)
Standardisation of Design As people “develop new value orientation by harnessing traditional and contemporary culture based knowledge through the vehicle of science of technology.’ What Asian design encompasses will also change. However as people aim for ‘non -standard [designs] in an age of standardisation’ approach in this case works against the designers as ‘non - standard’ becomes ‘standard’. What Asian design encompasses will become too large and it will be hard to distinguish from Western designs.
In response, for the product design concept. My design combined Asian design and western design by incorporating Chinese lanterns into a design inspired by western chandeliers.
