NEED FOR PROJECT TRAVEL DEMAND & CAPACITY Golden Glades Interchange currently carries is over 400,000 vehicles per day with direct impacts on regional travel within the tri-county area Travel demand within the interchange is projected to increase by approximately 50% by the 2040 year Critical movements experiencing heavy congestion with insufficient capacity include: 1. SR 826 EB to I-95 NB 2. Turnpike SB to I-95 SB 6
NEED FOR PROJECT SAFETY 3,238 total crashes between 2006 to 2010 19 fatalities 1,496 injury crashes Predominant Crashes Rear End – 44% Side Swipe – 18% Fixed Object – 12% Angle – 10% Annual Economic Loss Estimated at approx. $101 million Fatal Crash Locations 7
STUDY PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES INTERIM IMPROVEMENTS (NEAR TERM CONSTRUCTION) Provide a direct connection for SR 826 (Palmetto Expressway) eastbound to I-95 northbound Improve the Turnpike southbound to I-95 southbound connection Develop interim improvements within the Golden Glades Interchange to enhance safety, mobility and circulation ULTIMATE IMPROVEMENTS (CONSTRUCTED WITH SR 826 E-W PROJECT) Accommodate potential express lanes system and transit enhancements connection to Golden Glades Interchange Addition of express lanes from SR 826 connecting to I-95 to and from the north Enhance Turnpike Connector southbound to I-95 with possible express lanes direct connection Establish an Ultimate Master Plan for the Golden Glades Interchange 8
