  1. MEET THE BLOCKERS

  2. A CAST OF CHARACTERS This exercise introduces twelve characters who may be found in many partnerships, blocking the road to a successful outcome. Learn how to harness their characteristics to move your projects forward and how to avoid being a Blocker. With thanks to David Williams GNP Ltd

  3. “before we move on this, we need a feasibility study.”

  4. “What’s the point? I’ve heard it all before”

  5. “I can’t do it. I’m up to my eyes in my own work.”

  6. “That’s not the way we do things where I work – and it’s certainly not in my job description.”

  7. “All I want to know is, what’s in it for me?”

  8. “I’ve heard this partnership thing is a ruse to get rid of people.”

  9. “I’ll get back to you on that, trust me.”

  10. “How much will it cost?

  11. “Sorry, I’m late – I was double- booked. Got a spare agenda? Oh, I’ll have to dash off and see a client at lunchtime.”

  12. “It’s a complete shambles from start to finish. It will never work.”

  13. “Don’t come to me with your fancy ideas. What’s wrong with the way we used to do things?”

  14. “Well, that reminds me of a phone call I had on Wednesday – or was it Tuesday? No, I tell a lie, it was Thursday . . . “

  15. LETS PLAN AN EVENT TOGETHER Scenario: This is the first meeting of a new Christmas Event Planning Committee to create and deliver a new event in your Peak District town later this year. There has not been a Christmas event in your town for over three years after the Pantomime star for the big switch-on was electrocuted (no long term injury, but you can imagine the local headlines). Several local organisations and businesses have made modest attempts to muster an event with little success. Now a new team has been brought together to pool resources, and local expectations are high. You need to discuss the kind of event you will mount, agree a date, a venue, who will be responsible for different elements, a time line, a budget and sources of funding (incl VIK) for your event. • Take a character card each – then act ‘in character’ for the duration of the exercise • Select a meeting Chair and a notes taker • Proceed with your meeting until we ask you to pause or stop. • Be prepared to share (not in character) solutions you discover

  16. MEET THE ENABLERS • Victor the Visionary – sees the big picture, a driven enthusiast • Connected Connor – knows the right people • Practical Pete – gets things done • Steady Stan – keeps us on an even keel, mucks in • Creative Cathy – arty ideas girl with great network • Marketing Maggie – writes a fabulous press release • Reliable Rita – does what she says, says what she does • Terry the Treasurer – monitors the money, applies for funds • Andrea the Administrator – record keeper extraordinaire • Oliver On-line – manages websites and social media like a native
