Rockinghorse is a Brighton-based charity which has been supporting children for over 50 years. It was set up in 1967 by Dr Trevor Mann to improve healthcare services for sick children and babies. The charity fundraises for items for every child's treatment, from toys to life-saving equipment.

More children having teeth out in hospital in England By Alex Therrien Health reporter, BBC News 13 January 2018 There were 42,911 operations in 2016-17 - up from 40,800 the previous year and 36,833 in 2012-13, NHS figures show. The government said it was "determined" to reduce the number of extractions. Doctors said many of the tooth extractions would be caused by the food and drink children consume and were therefore ‘completely preventable’ An analysis of NHS figures by the Local Government Association, which represents councils in England and Wales, found the equivalent of 170 hospital tooth extractions a day were being carried out on under-18s.

• Practices should welcome children 0-3 • Be aware a full clinical examination is desirable but not always achievable. • The key purpose of this visit is to deliver key preventive messages and begin a positive lifelong relationship with NHS dentistry.

What not to do • Never leave your baby or toddler with a feeding bottle or trainer cup in their mouth for long periods of time, such as when they go to bed, and never dip a bottle or pacifier in sweet or fruit-based drinks. • Please do not put drinks other than milk in your baby’s bottle or add anything to milk such as sugar or honey as this can be very damaging to your child’s teeth. • It’s also recommended that parents shouldn’t “clean” their babies’ dummies or bottles by putting them in their own mouths. You could pass on bacteria to your child which would otherwise not be present in their mouths.

What were the aim of the project and where they achieved? 1.Increase numbers of pre-school children seen by dentist in primary dental care in KSS, this would include children prior to their first birthday 2.Support delivery of consistent evidence based oral health messages to parents of registered children 3.Disseminated information to relevant health, local authority commissioned and community groups 4.Create a change in culture enabling dental practices to welcome children under the age of three making this the norm rather than the exception 5. Publicize new practice to relevant networks within health care and in the public domain 6. Contribute to The British Society of Paediatric Dentistry Dental Check by 1 National Campaign 7. What were the expected outcomes of this project and have they been achieved? • Increased numbers of children under three seen in by dentist in primary dental care • Creating links with wider health workforce, LA and community groups • We are still working toward achieving this outcomes an increase in numbers has been achieved but falls short of the target of 30% desired target, • Relationships are starting to develop with LA, PHE and other stakeholder Longer term reduction in the dental decay rate and numbers of children needing extractions under GA
