MISSION  Ensure that students with disabilities have equitable access to University programs, services, activities, and facilities  Applicable laws:  Section 504, Rehabilitation Act of 1973  Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), and ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA)  No longer IDEA (governs K-12 and facilitates success )  Must perform same competencies in courses

  4. STEPS TO REQUEST REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS  Process generally begins after acceptance  1. Self-Identify  2. Document  3. Initial Meeting  4. Decision  5. Plan of Accommodation

SELF-IDENTIFY  Must identify self as an individual with a disability  A few methods to do so:  Return “Optional Disclosure Form” sent to student by Admissions Office – to me or to Admissions  Contact ODSS directly  570-484-2665  Disability_Services@lockhaven.edu  Coming soon – Online through “Accommodate” link

  6. DOCUMENT  Submit documentation of disability to ODSS – scan/email, fax, mail  Definition of disability:  limits one or more major life activities and participation in courses, programs, services, jobs, activities, and/or facilities  Documentation must be from appropriate medical or mental health professional  Psychoeducational or Psychological Evaluation or Re-Eval. (from school psychologist, private psychologist, psychiatrist, etc.)  Letter from medical professional (doctor, audiologist, etc.)  May use one of our forms – contact ODSS to obtain  Must contain recommendations for reasonable accommodations

  7. INITIAL MEETING  Beginning of Interactive Process  In-person, Phone, or Zoom Video Chat (need a computer with webcam & we send link to student)  We review request & discuss with student:  How disability impacts student,  Documentation & recommendations,  Options,  Resources available

  8. DECISION  Reasonable accommodation?  Director makes determination of approval, rejection, need more information  Informs student

  9. PLAN OF ACCOMMODATION If approved, we collaboratively develop Plan of Accommodation.  Could include (most common):  “Letter of Accommodation”:  STUDENT sends to professors & STUDENT meets with/talks to Prof to implement academic accommodations, with my support  Notification to Housing, Dining, Facilities, etc.  Referral to on- or off-campus offices/agencies (OVR, Counseling, Tutoring, Sight Services, etc.)  Recommendations/Training on Assistive T echnology  Academic Coaching 

IN GENERAL – RESOURCES & SUPPORT Resources and support can include, but are not limited to:  accommodated testing,  note taking assistance,  texts in audio format,  academic advising,  counseling,  advocacy with instructors and staff,  assistive technology,  priority registration, and  referrals to other on- and off-campus offices or agencies  Other 

EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENT IN COLLEGE Getting themselves up and going to class  Navigating campus independently  Walking in the classroom late if you have to  Self-Advocacy  Building a new support network: Talk to people, including professors!  Time Management: Spend the time doing the work (~30 hours/week if full time)  Organization: Use a planner!  Develop Study System  Mind open to learning new things and new strategies  Search for technology that works for you (note-taking Apps, Audio Books for on the go) 
