Living Building Challenge_Water Petal
Petal Intent... “The intent of the Water Petal is to realign how people use water and to redefjne ‘waste’ in the built environment, so that water is respected as a precious resource.” Problems: 1) Potable Water Shortage This is a problem on the rise. Due to issues like climate change and unsustainable water use patterns, places that have previously never had water shortage issues are now also at risk. 2) Bad Water “ Contaminated water kills 4000 children a day” -UNICEF (http://www.unicef.org/wash/index_23606.html) The Living Building Challenge envisions a future where water harvesting is done in harmony with the environment, in a way that “natu - rally respects the hydrology of the land.” Too much water is wasted. Potable water is used for things like fmushing toilets, washing our cars, and watering our lawns. Standard toilets use roughly 3 gallons of water per fmush. In the context of increasing global po - table water shortages, these behaviors are unsustainable and unacceptable.
Net Positive Water_ LBC Imperative 05 “Project water use and release must work in harmony with the natural water fmows of the site and its surroundings. One hundred percent of the project’s water needs must be supplied by captured precipitation or other natural closed loop water systems, and/or by re-cycling used project water, and must be purifjed as needed without the use of chemicals. All stormwater and water discharge, including grey and black water, must be treated onsite and managed either through re-use, a closed loop system, or infjltration. Excess stormwater can be released onto adjacent sites under certain conditions.” -Living Building Challenge 3.0 p.30
