Proposed Design in Site This sculpture is based on creativity being a light. I wanted to create a work of art that was a beacon for what is happening in the Linen Arts District. When you pass this sculpture, there will be no question you are entering an area with a distinct style. I am excited about this design because it: -is an image that everyone will understand -draws from the style I observed in the district -is highly adaptable to fjt all the requirements of being on a street -has conceptual weight -utilizes the way people pass to make it look like it is moving without moving parts -is easy to maintain -will stand out in the street -can be enjoyed passing quickly in a vehicle or up close on foot -creates a connection between imagination and light I see creativity as a light; it radiates out from a point of origin, it refmects off almost everything, and it is changed by everything it comes in contact with. Creativity and light make things visible and help things grow. They are both freely shared and have measurable energy. Joshua Wiener “Linen Lights” Linen District Sculpture Project 3
Concept Statement This piece is about perception. I have been working on sculptures that play with the way the audience passes the piece. In the past, I have focused this series in roundabouts. The audience is always passing in a controlled fashion so the way their perspective changes can be used to create an experience. Things come into view and disappear based on the viewer’s orientation in the space. This lamp is a major breakthrough in this series because it can be viewed from many angles and will have a similar experience. The shapes and positioning of materials in the lamp shade will make the sculpture look like the composition is constantly moving. At night, the same thing will be amplifjed because the planes that are projecting out from the bulb will all be brilliantly lit. This sculpture has a kinetic experience without moving parts. I am delighted to be considered for this project. I see this as an opportunity to make a landmark for art. I would love the chance to talk with you further about it. If I were there, you would see my hands moving wildly as I spoke. Unfortunately, there isn’t a punctuation that can convey my enthusiasm. Project Details The sculpture I am proposing is a giant Modern lamp. It will be made in stainless and mild steel with lighting set where the bulb would be. (The model is 1” = 1’.) The fjnal sculpture will be 17’ x 15’ x 6’. This sculpture will sit marvelously at the entrance to the Linen District on Grove Street (I am open to discussing different locations with the committee). The way I am able to make such a signifjcant sculpture is all the cut outs for the lamp shade will become the bulb structure. The complete use of all the materials is something LEED certifjcation places a high value on. Most of the best projects still have 15% waste. This art will accentuate the sustainability efforts going on in Boise. I spoke with an engineer who felt confjdent we could create this piece. Once I get my soil samples and know what utilities I am going to have to account for in my foundation, I will defjne the lighting. If the foundation is straight forward, I will be able to install a more sophisticated lighting system inside the sculpture. I have already budgeted for lights no matter what the foundation is. The lights will be easily accessible. I would like to use LED lights because they last forever and use the least amount of energy. I will use a common LED so it could be easily replaced if there was ever the need. I will make this piece as easy to maintain as possible. The sculpture will arrive in three pieces that will bolt together on site. This will make the installation quick and easy. The bottom will have the hardware that connects it to the foundation hidden under the terraced base plate. This sculpture will be precisely machined. The lamp shade and bulb will all be in stainless steel so if the paint is not maintained, it will still look beautiful forever. The base needs to be a heavy gauge material so I went with plain steel. The base and stand will be easy to repaint if needed because everything in plain steel will be easily accessible. Joshua Wiener “Linen Lights” Linen District Sculpture Project 5
