  1. KS2 Reading Workshop 2017

  2. 2 readers who are good at decoding but … • An active reader builds meaning • A passive reader has weak comprehension

  3. Reading stamina to become a capable reader

  4. What are the main aspects? • Explaining the meaning of words • Finding and recording information • Summarising • Justifying inferences • Predicting • How word choice enhances meaning • Making comparisons.

  5. Reading at school Guided reading Comprehension exercises Regular independent reading Reading their own and others’ compositions Reading for topic work/research Shared reading Hearing books read aloud on Selecting their own choice of texts

  6. How can support at home help? • It is really important to carry on reading with children at KS2.

  7. Suggest reading as a free time activity

  8. • Talk about the illustrations in a more sophisticated picture book.

  9. • If your child is struggling or too tired – model reading to them or simply take over for a while and encourage them to read along with you. • Read a page or paragraph each.

  10. Ask your child about what has happened in the story • Good readers do not remember the exact words of the text, they remember the ‘ gist’ • In order to retell a story , you have to pick out the important parts (summarise) and put them into your own words (synthesise)

  11. Use the NEW words • Encourage your child to use the language of the story they have been reading.

  12. Good readers ask questions • When we read we make predictions, ask ourselves questions about the text and then look for the answer. • It is more powerful if we can get children to ask the questions themselves.

  13. Open question starters • I wonder if … • I wonder why … • Tell me about … • Why do you think … • Tell me more about … • How do you know … • Ask your child questions which will deepen their understanding of the text

  14. Be seen reading yourselves and … …stretch your children by reading higher level books to them.

  15. • Read the same story independently … then discuss the text … watch the film.

  16. Experts • Encourage your child to read to younger siblings … to make them feel like the expert

  17. Encourage a love of reading
