  1. JV DOG VISITATION SESSION 2 3100 Cherry Hill Road | Ann Arbor, MI | 48105 (734) 662-5585 | www.hshv.org

  2. Agenda  Dog body language review  Challenges in dog visitation  Animal visitation time  What’s Next?

  3. Working Safely With Shelter Animals Common Issues: Being Mouthy Reaction to other animals and/or people Trying to get out of the kennel and/or loose animals

  4. Awareness Helps with Many Challenges  Read the binder to gain information

  5. Share Your Notes  Clear handwriting  Details of how the visit went  Be descriptive!

  6. Which is Helpful? This one? This one? That dog was crazy! Cosmo was very excited when I entered the kennel and had trouble settling down. He kept jumping and was very mouthy but when I gave him a toy he settled down.

  7. Exiting or Entering the Kennels/Rooms  Training opportunity  Make animals wait patiently before entering/exiting  Use your body as a barrier  Use food or toys as a distraction  Get assistance from staff/volunteers

  8. Loose Animals  Prevention is the key!  Yell “Loose ___”  Give location  Watch the animal  Do not try to get the animal back in their kennel once they have left the doorway

  9. Help Our Animals to Be the Best!  Discourage rough play  Use calm, gentle petting  Respond to their cues  Think from the animal’s perspective

  10. Down Time?  Make and pass out treats (remember the food bowl sticker)  Stop in at the front desk to see if they need help  Ask Amelia or Jessie for assistance

  11. Let’s Visit Our Animals! Please return 10 minutes before your class is over 

  12. What’s Next?  After Today  You may sign up for “JV Dog and Puppy Socialization” (these shifts will be made available to you in your VIC account).  Dog visitation shifts fill up well in advance  Contact Amelia or Jessie with any issues or questions

  13. Reminders…  You may only volunteer for what you sign up for!  If you do any shelter cleaning, you cannot visit with more animals that day  You may not bring friends or family members with you (unless they are a JV or adult volunteer and have signed up for a shift)  You should only plan on staying for your assigned shift

  14. THANK YOU! 3100 Cherry Hill Road | Ann Arbor, MI | 48105 (734) 662-5585 | www.hshv.org
