HISTORY ▪ FIRST OWNERS OF RECORD WERE JOHN WARNER AND JOHN GRANT, WHO WERE GRANTED ADJACENT TRACTS ON DIFFICULT RUN BY THE NORTHERN NECK PROPRIETARY IN 1731. BY THE TURN OF THE 19 TH CENTURY, JOHN SWIFT HAD ACQUIRED MUCH OF THIS LAND FOR HIS ESTATE, ▪ CALLED “LONG GLADES”. ▪ DURING THE 1920’S, JOSEPH WHEELER ACQUIRED THE MAJORITY OF THE P ROPERTY OF WHAT TODAY WOULD MAKE UP LAKE FAIRFAX PARK. ▪ WHEELER WAS A DAIRY FARMER, OWNED A MILLING BUSINESS AND A FARM SUPPLY STORE. HE WAS A ACTIVE MEMBER IN LOCAL CITIZENS ASSOCIATIONS AND HOSTED SEVERAL EVENTS, SUCH AS DANCES AND HORSE SHOWS AT THE PROPERTY. ▪ AFTER WHEELER PASSED AWAY, MACK CRIPPEN AND HIS WIFE PURCHASED THE PROPERTY, CREATED A DAM, AND DEVELOPED THE PROPERTY AS A RECREATION AREA. ▪ CRIPPEN’S PROPERTY WAS CONVEYED TO THE FAIRFAX PARK AUTHORITY IN 1966. ADDITIONAL PARCELS WERE ACQUIRED OVER THE YEARS TO CONSITUTE THE AREA THAT MAKES UP THE PARK TODAY.
