The Flute! The flute is a member of the woodwind family. You blow the flute by blowing across the headjoint, like blowing into a bottle top. The flute breaks down into 3 small pieces. It is a beautiful and soaring instrument. It is found in bands, orchestras and jazz groups. The Clarinet! The clarinet is a member of the woodwind family. It is a single reed instrument. It can be made of plastic or wood. The clarinet uses a reed to produce it’s sound. The Oboe! The oboe is a double reed woodwind instrument. It looks similar to the clarinet in colour and size. The oboe has a beautiful mysterious and melodic sound. The Alto Saxophone! The Saxophone is the newest member of the woodwind family. It is made of metal, has lots of keys and uses a reed to produce it’s sound. The saxophone is found commonly in Jazz! The Trumpet! The trumpet is a member of the brass family. It has 3 valves and you play the trumpet by buzzing into the mouthpiece. There are 4 slides on the trumpet used to tune the instrument. The trumpet is found in many groups! Orchestras, concert bands, Jazz groups, marching bands and more! It’s such a fun and versatile instrument. The French Horn The french horn is a member of the brass family. It has a mouthpiece to buzz into and rotary valves that move to change the notes. The french horn is a very long tube! The Trombone! The trombone is also a member of the brass family. It has a slide to change the notes and a deep sound. You play the trombone by buzzing through the mouthpiece and blowing lots of air through the instrument. The trombone is a versatile instrument found in concert bands, jazz groups, orchestras and marching bands. The Baritone/Euphonium! The baritone or euphonium are members of the brass family. They have valves which are similar to the trumpet. The sound of the baritone or euphonium is very low! The Bass Guitar! Since the 1960’s the electric bass has filled the role of the acoustic double bass in many music settings. The function of the bass is to lead the rhythm section and to anchor the beat. The bass guitar is very versatile and can many different types of music from Jazz to blues, soul and funk. The Drums! The drums are a very important member of the band! Their job is to keep the whole group in time and together as an ensemble. When playing in band you not only play the drum kit but also the cymbals, auxiliary percussion such as the triangle, bass drum, tambourine and more!
