It Is Finished Christ has accomplished our redemption.
The Atonement • “Atonement means making amends, blotting out the offense, and giving satisfaction for wrong done; thus reconciling to oneself the alienated other and restoring the disrupted relationship.” (J. I. Packer) • ‘a making at one’ – points to a process of bringing those who are estranged into a unity.
The Atonement • The atonement is God’s work to reconcile his people to himself through the life and death of his Son Jesus. • Romans 5:6-11
"We are so familiar with the plain statement that Christ was at once the sacrifice and the priest,–'he offered up himself'–that we think we have fully mastered its contents, while we may have done little more than skim the surface. That it must contain great depths of truth should be obvious from the fact that it presents a consideration absolutely unparalleled, and singular, and unique.” Hugh Martin, The Atonement
‘It is Finished’ • “When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” (John 19:30, ESV)
What is Finished? • God’s wrath towards our sin is finished. • God’s wrath is aroused by our sin. • “among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.” (Ephesians 2:3, ESV)
What is Finished? • God’s wrath towards our sin is finished. • God’s wrath is satisfied through his Son. • “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (1 John 4:10, ESV)
What is Finished? • God’s wrath towards our sin is finished. • Because Jesus satisfied the wrath of God, we are now fully reconciled to God. • “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1, ESV)
How is It Finished? • “For our sake God made him [Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21, ESV) • Jesus lived in our place. • Jesus died in our place. • Because Jesus is our substitute, he has purchased all our blessings.
Who Finished It? • Acts 4:27-28 • The Triune God in eternity past planned to redeem a people by each member of the Godhead agreeing to certain roles.
Who Finished It? • God the Father appointed his Son to be the servant for redemption. • God the Son accepted the responsibility of a servant. • God the Spirit anointed the Son to carry out his responsibility of a servant.
Who Finished It? • Because redemption is the work of God, he alone is to be praised for our salvation. “I could not have gained my salvation without calvary.” v. “Christ gained my salvation for me at calvary.”
When/Where is It Finished? • “He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.” (Hebrews 7:27, ESV) • Christ accomplished our complete redemption at his death on the cross.
When/Where is It Finished? • Because Christ accomplished our redemption, we have assurance of salvation. • Romans 8:28-30
Why is It Finished? • Ephesians 2:5-9 • God out of his sovereign grace chose to redeem a people for himself.
Why is It Finished? “Because he loved us, he came after us in Christ. He pursued us even to the desolate anguish of the cross, where he bore our sin, guilt, judgment, and death. It takes a hard and stoney heart to remain unmoved by love like that. It is more than love. Its proper name is ‘grace,’ which is love to the undeserving.” (John Stott, The Cross of Christ )
