In International l Partnership for Nucle lear Dis isarmament Verif ification • Launched in 2014 by US Department of State and Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) • Objectives: • To build capacity among NWS and NNWS in the field of nuclear disarmament verification • To improve and broaden understanding of the challenges inherent in nuclear disarmament verification and monitoring • To provide international leadership by facilitating technical progress to address the challenges of nuclear disarmament verification • Membership: 27 States (not publicly identified), plus the European Union • Plenary meetings 2015-2016: Washington, Oslo, Tokyo, Abu Dhabi (Argentina late 2017) • Working Groups (defined Terms of Reference, hypothetical dismantlement scenario) • 1. Monitoring and Verification Objectives (Netherlands and United Kingdom, co-chairs) • 2. On-Site Inspections (Australia and Poland, co-chairs) • 3. Technical Challenges and Solutions (Sweden and United States, co-chairs) Will outcome of Phase I be made public? Will it enjoy continued support post- 2017 Plenary Meeting? Phase II? Expand membership?

Requests the Secretary-General to seek the views of Member States on the development and strengthening of practical and effective nuclear disarmament verification measures … • OP 7. Also requests the Secretary-General to establish a group of governmental experts (25 people, meetings 2018-2019 in Geneva, GGE established at 2017 UNGA) Give your views to UNSG. Which issues should it work on? Consider how Asia-Pacific may be represented on the GGE. How may countries that are not invited to participate in the existing regimes contribute to nuclear disarmament verification?
