TTC Research • North Carolina’s 1:1 Learning Initiative Pilot – “A central tenet of the 1:1 initiative under current study is that preparing future-ready students requires future- ready school environments…” • Learning with Technology - immersion study – “Students spend more time collaborating, participate in more project - based instruction, leads to more writing and this writing is of higher quality. Increased access to information and improved research and analysis skills…” • Maine's 1:1 Netbook Program 2009 – “The smaller size of a netbook has the additional advantages of: portability – just over 1kg, a smaller footprint allows for more productive space on student desks, they also fit easily into student’s bags...” 1:1 LAPTOP PROGRAM | BoT Meeting, January 2010
TTC Research • CDL Study - Alaska's 1:1 – “a) An increase in student engagement and a decrease in behavioral issues were pronounced; b) improvements in student writing; c)student expression broadened to include many forms of writing; d) student achievement was either mixed or held steady. There were slight increases in writing scores…” • CEESA Schools – Three laptop programs were assessed: American School of Warsaw, Vienna American International School and the International School of Prague. The highest degree of success for these programs occurred in the Middle School programs which later expanded to the High School programs. The biggest technical issues faced in the implementation of 1:1 computing programs were charging the laptop batteries, and providing an appropriate electrical infrastructure . 1:1 LAPTOP PROGRAM | BoT Meeting, January 2010
TTC Recommendation • Based on the research of 1:1 laptop programs and the ISB Middle School Teacher Survey, the TTC recommends the implementation of the 1:1 laptop program in the ISB Middle School for the 2010 – 2011 SY. • Expansion of the ICT and technical support was recognized as an important role in the success of the implementation of the 1:1 laptop program 1:1 LAPTOP PROGRAM | BoT Meeting, January 2010
1:1 IT Projected Budget for the 2010 – 2011 SY • Proposed vendor is Toshiba which offered a 11.6” model with 3 – Year “No Matter What” warranty and a battery lifetime of nine hours. Ninety-seven laptops required for the MS 1:1 program. • Proposed vendor for the wireless infrastructure at Middle School is Xirrus. It specializes in preparing infrastructures for educational institutions • 1:1 additional cost to the regular IT budget in Year 1 would be USD 90,500.00 1:1 LAPTOP PROGRAM | BoT Meeting, January 2010

1:1 Laptop Program: Questions & Answers • Q. Will students be expected to bring their laptops to school every day? A. Yes, the laptop is considered as an essential learning similar to paper and pen. Our instructional program has taken advantage of the digital toolkit with students applying the critical thinking, collaboration, communication and risk taking skills. • Q. What happens if the laptop does not work or is accidentally damaged? A. ISB laptops include a hardware warranty and accidental damage insurance. The IT Department will provide support for both hardware and software problems. The manufacturer's warranty will cover hardware defects; the accidental damage policy will cover any accidental damage. In the event that a laptop needs to be shipped away for repair, the student will receive a "loaner" laptop. 1:1 LAPTOP PROGRAM | BoT Meeting, January 2010
1:1 Laptop Program: Questions & Answers • Q. What advantages will the One to One initiative bring? A. Technology has revolutionized society. 1:1 computing will better enable students to meet the challenges of the 21st Century • Q. What will a student do if he/she forgets their laptop at home? A. A loaner will be issued from the helpdesk and a communication will be sent to the divisional offices - frequency is tracked. Students are responsible for returning the laptop at the end of the school. • Q. What are my child's responsibilities at school regarding computer usage? A.
