Progression from Grade 6 to 7 Mr Stuart McLellan
Research Promotions: Grade 6-7 General Principles: • Grades are applied to job roles • A permanent and substantial change to an existing role must: • Arise out of a genuine business need • Take account of fixed budgets The following are not sufficient grounds for regrading: • Future of possible development of the post • An increase in the volume of work • And increase in the capabilities of the post holder
Research Promotions: Grade 6-7 Requirements for proposing a promotion • A clear need identified for the new role • Available funding such as to enable the proposed change • The individual meets the requirements associate with the proposed grade
Research Promotions: Grade 6-7 Process The application should be submitted to the Executive Dean and includes: • A short CV • HoD statement about future funding arrangements, as well as a brief explanation of the business case for the change • The name of two external referees (to be taken up at the discretion of the Dean) The Executive dean will make the final decision in consultation with the Vice Principal (Health)
Research Promotions: Grade 6-7 Summary of Criteria To achieve promotion to Grade 7 a researcher must demonstrate: • Expertise in research (as publicly evidence by successful research programmes supported by publication and/or reports) • Active participation in the planning of research projects • The ability to co-ordinate the work of other staff • The ability to obtain funding for his/her work The research profile of a Grade 7 researcher will be at least as great as that of those appointed to Lecturer Grade 7.

Independent Researcher Award IOPPN Post-Doc Career Progression Event Dr. Deepak P. Srivastava, Lecturer, Department of Basic and Clinical Neuroscience
What is it? Joint initiative of the IOPPN Research Innovation Committee (RIC) and Postdoc Network Committee Only for Postdocs (junior researchers) Support of independently-developed grant proposal Six awards per year of £2,500 2 awards funded by NIHR BRC
Can I apply? Postdoc at the IOPPN Must be contracted for the period of the proposed work No previous fellowships or grants (excluding travel and conference awards) (not previous recipient of IOPPN- IRA) Support of Supervisor/Principal Investigator
What does it fund? New idea – can be based on current project, but independent from current work Consumables; travel; training; animal costs; participant costs; equipment costs Cannot be used for salary costs Aim to provide support for a pilot study for a future fellowship
How do I apply? Application form (intranet) Short CV (MRC template) Short description of: applicants career stage How application is independent from current (and supervisor’s) work What the funds are for Expected outcomes (including how it will help you) Letter of support from Supervisor
What not to do when applying? Not meeting the eligibility criteria (i.e. already have funding; too early in career trajectory) Too much overlap with current/supervisor’s project Unclear applications (e.g. too much jargon) Incomplete applications (missing supervisor letter) Unrealistic or vague costing estimates
How can I maximise my chances of being funded? Demonstrate independent thinking Clear description of work – accessible to non-specialists Strong Supervisor support Realistic cost estimates
Any other tips? Read the eligibility Time!!! Discuss your ideas Don’t Give Up! Good Luck!
