CHIEF OF DELEGATION - DENMARK The Invictus Games 2014 Held in London on 7-14 September • 2014 3 day sporting event plus Opening • March and Closing Concert Hosted in iconic London 2012 venues in • the Olympic Park 400 participants • Approx. 600 volunteers • Significant media coverage across all • platforms before, during and after the event

  3. CHIEF OF DELEGATION - DENMARK § An international Paralympic-style multi-sport event § ”Invented” by the British Prince Harry, inspired by US Warrior Games § 400 Competitors wounded/injured/ sick soldiers § 14 (13) countries represented

  5. CHIEF OF DELEGATION - DENMARK WHAT IS INVICTUS GAMES 2014 § ”Meet and Compeet” and Elite, § The competitors were from the wars of the last 25 years, § Physically or mentally injured.

  6. CHIEF OF DELEGATION - DENMARK 9 disciplines 9 sports • Athletics • Archery • Swimming • Cycling • Indoor Rowing • Power lifting • Wheelchair Basketball • Wheelchair Rugby • Sitting Volleyball

CHIEF OF DELEGATION - DENMARK What did DENMARK do ? • Establishing the project • National Steering Group • Project organisation • Find the Athletes • Train them • Bring them to competition • Sounds easy but !!!!!!!!!!!! • Require funding • Require manpower • Where to find the Athletes ? In /out of service • How to deal with Wounded, Injured and Sick • Respect rehabilitation plans • Families ?

  9. CHIEF OF DELEGATION - DENMARK THE ATHLETES • Facebook was primary contact • 27 soldiers went (initially 32 Athletes) • 25 % suffer from PTSD • Back injuriees and amputees • Individual sports • Team sports • Primary sports • Secondary sports

CHIEF OF DELEGATION - DENMARK What did DENMARK do ? • 4 pre INVICTUS assemblies • Social purpose • Team building • Get aquainted to limits • Sports training • Arrange training on a day to day basis • Use local sport clubs • Pay for trainer capacities • Deal with group 24/7 • Deal with relatives • Travel arrangements etc • Total delegation of 80 persons including relatives

CHIEF OF DELEGATION - DENMARK What did DENMARK learn? • Requirements • Manpower • Budgetting • 24/7 commitment • Amazing results • Sports is not rehabilitation…. but it helps… a lot… • PTSDs are difficult to deal with, but develops immensely…… • ”Meet and Compeet” quickly becomes ”elite” • Relatives • Can be nescessary to bring but it is a planning and execution nightmare

CHIEF OF DELEGATION - DENMARK What’s in it for CISM? • CISM already has para-initiatives; • Get inspired by INVICTUS…. • We must include PTSDs • Use categorisation, let everybody participate • Overall Para-Policy • Sport is not rehabilitation… but it is a means to assist in a rehabilitation process. • It is also part of a process to set up new personal goals after rehabilitation. • Active duty and those who have retired.

  14. CHIEF OF DELEGATION - DENMARK PARA SPORTS IN CISM • FRANCE february 2015; swimming. PTSDs:yes, there is an open class!! • CISM WORLD GAMES; Archery and Athletics …… Open class for PTSDs???? • And both events active duty only.!!!!!
