PRESS RELEASE Invictus Games athlete Nathan Cumberland presented with Mudathon Cheque for £11,061 for Help for Heroes Students and staff from Sir William Robertson Academy, Welbourn are absolutely over the moon with raising over £11,000 for Help for Heroes by holding a Mudathon challenge recently. As a follow up to the fantastic fundraising Nathan Cumberland was invited to visit the school to talk to the students. Nathan who is a former Grenadier Guards/Paratrooper and Invictus Games competitor from Newark came into school on Wednesday 19th October to talk about his role as Ambassador for Help for Heroes, the help and support the charity has given him, the challenges and opportunities he has experienced since his injuries and how the money raised helps people like him. Nathan is training for the next Invictus Games in Canada in September 2017 as well as the London World Championships next year and is hoping to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. He competed at the inaugural Invictus Games in London launched by Prince Harry and then again in Orlando at the US Invictus Games earlier this year. Nathan, who trains at Mansfield competed in Athletic events including shotput and discus and also powerlifting. Mr Kerry Symmons, Head of PE commented: “ We were delighted to welcome Nathan into the school and give such an inspirational talk to our students and staff. All the staff at Sir William Robertson Academy would like to congratulate our students on taking part in our schools first “Mudathon” event. The purpose of the day was to enhance pupil resilience, raise money for “Help for Heroes” and to erode mental barriers individuals can often put on themselves. The event taught our pupils to push themselves beyond their natural comfort zone and foster a belief that anything is possible and that their potential to achieve is actually limitless. Over £11,000 was raised with many pupils raising hundreds of pounds. I would like to congratulate our top two fund raisers Ewan Armstrong who managed to raise £235 and Louis Lambert who raised £216 all for a very worthy charity. Approximately 50 of our students all individually raised between £50-£200 which again is fantastic. ” The school is driven by the aim to ASPIRE and this directs the work of all staff and pupils. In recent years it has become one of the most sought after schools in Lincolnshire, with parents recognising the benefits of
choosing a very successful school in a safe, rural setting with superb pastoral care. The addition of the Sixth Form facility means that parents are confident that their children can continue their education in this supportive environment with high academic results. Sir William Robertson Academy is ju dged as ‘Good’ in all areas of the school following its Ofsted inspection in 2015. The school has been recognised as being one of the ‘Top 100 non -selective state- funded schools in England’ in a recent letter from a letter from Nick Gibb MP – Minister of State for Schools. The school offers comprehensive education for 11-18 year olds and is quite unique with its safe, rural location between the villages of Welbourn and Leadenham but easily accessible from Newark, Grantham, Sleaford and Lincoln and surrounding villages – with school buses serving each of these areas. Ends Nathan is pictured talking at two Assemblies and being presented with the large cheque with Mudathon organiser and Head of PE Mr Kerry Symmons and top fundraiser Ewan Armstrong.
