  2. #1 Engage your stakeholders • Are my council senior leadership team and councillors on board with the project? • Have I formed a multi-disciplinary project team? • Is the good will and work of external partners and stakeholders required and have they been engaged? www.local.gov.uk

  3. #2 Work out your sample size • Do I have a readily available sample size or will I look to recruit residents to take part? • Have I used the power calculator to work out my sample size online? • Have I spoken to any data, research or performance officers in my council if struggling with the power calculation? www.local.gov.uk

  4. #3 Be mindful of other transformational projects • Am I planning other transformational activity in the service at the same time as carrying out the trial? • Are new systems being put in place and how will this affect my trial? • Has a new law come into force recently or is it coming soon? www.local.gov.uk

  5. #4 Be aware of procurement and restructuring • Who currently delivers the service? • Is a procured service involved in the project and/or will I be re-procuring during the lifecycle of the project? • Can I include any learnings from the project in a future service plan or specification? www.local.gov.uk

  6. #5 Ensure sufficient service capacity • Do I have a contingency plan for different eventualities? • Am I able to adopt an agile project management approach to adapt to different needs and demands? www.local.gov.uk

  7. #6 Data, data, data • Have I factored in enough time to gather evidence into my project timeline? • Have I identified the root of the problem in order to decide on an intervention? • Have I tested assumptions in the data? • Have I looked into collating both types of data – quantitative and qualitative? • Is a data sharing agreement needed and have I included this in my project plan? www.local.gov.uk

  8. #7 Assess and manage risk • Will the project require ethical clearance from any local and or national bodies? • Who will I need to apply to? How long will it take? www.local.gov.uk

  9. #8 Simplify your intervention • Are the nudges automated or do they need manual assistance or human intervention? • Am I looking to trial something manageable rather than biting off more than I can chew initially? www.local.gov.uk

  10. #9 Measure your results • How do I know if the person has received the nudge and that it is the nudge specifically that has caused the change in behaviour? • Will I carry out a 12 month review and analysis of the results and lessons learnt? www.local.gov.uk

  11. #10 Scale your intervention • Are others interested in the trial and can I keep in touch with them as it progresses? • Have I enabled another team to start their own behavioural insights intervention? • Have I contacted the LGA to help me to scale the approach nationwide? www.local.gov.uk

  13. LGA behavioural insights 2018/19 funding • £25,000 match fund • 8 councils received the grant • Currently procuring a supplier and scoping their projects • A scoping document for each project will be available from April • Results will be available over the coming year www.local.gov.uk

  14. Using behavioural insights in housing • The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham – changing the perceptions and therefore uptake of sheltered housing • Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council – reducing the proportion of local authority housing tenants in rent arrears www.local.gov.uk

  15. Using behavioural insights in health and children’s services • City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council – increasing the uptake of the flu vaccine • Warwickshire County Council – reducing demand on the MASH (Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub) and enabling appropriate referrals to undertake an assessment www.local.gov.uk

  16. Using behavioural insights to reduce waste and increase recycling • The London Borough of Havering – reducing household waste • The London Borough of Hounslow – increasing levels of recycling in high rise flats www.local.gov.uk

  17. Using behavioural insights to combat litter and flytipping • New Forest District Council – reducing the amount of litter thrown from vehicles • Westminster City Council – increasing levels of recycling and reducing the amount of abandoned waste on the streets www.local.gov.uk
