NORDUnet NOC structure Nordic infrastructure for Research & Education • NOC is available 24/7 • Active monitoring between 07:00-19:00 oncall rest of the time (alarms and phone) • 6 dedicated personnel working in shift • Functions performed by NOC include: Monitoring, troubleshooting, provisioning, planning (participates in projects)

NORDUnet Network & Services Nordic infrastructure for Research & Education • Dark fiber network • Alcatel DWDM and Juniper router • Virtual server environment running on VM-ware for most services • Monitoring • Nagios – for most “server” services • Zino - (snmp polling) for network services • Proprietary (vendor) systems for transport equipment, with some tweaks to get the most important alarms into Zino

NORDUnet Front end Nordic infrastructure for Research & Education • The NOC serve primarily Nordic NRENs and other Nordic organisations • Usually in contact with network engineers • SLA depends on service, from very simple to extremely detailed • Ticket system send out information (email) and wiki for documentation

NORDUnet Inter NOC communication Nordic infrastructure for Research & Education • NOC communicate with other departments mainly using E-mail and IM (jabber, a chatroom is usually created during major fault) • Mainly communicating with providers using email, track providers ticket systems. • Retrieve reports from our ticket system to use at provider followup meetings • Headertags for filtering tickets

NORDUnet Documentation Nordic infrastructure for Research & Education • We document everything! • Relations (customers & suppliers), equipment, design (network, services), projects, procedures, software • Wiki is main source of documentation, mainly manual documentation • Developing network inventory to automatically keep track of documentation (network & services)
