  2. HUDSON COUNTY COALITION • Established in 2004 • Serves 12 municipalities with a population over 600K • Drug priorities: underage drinking & Rx drugs • Received DFC support grant in 2011 • Secured additional coalition funding; • Regional coalition Grant (approx. $200K per year) • Partnerships for Success Grant (approx. $85K per year) • DFC Mentoring Grant (approx. $75K per year) • Consulting Contracts with 3 local coalitions

  3. I HATE BUZZ WORDS “Fiscal Agent/Coalition Partnership” “Sustainability”

  4. COALITION/FISCAL AGENT PARTNERSHIP • What is the best fiscal agent/coalition relationship you can imagine? • What is the worst fiscal agent/coalition relationship you can imagine? • Where are you?

  5. SUSTAINABILITY Think about… • Long Term Impact • Human Resources • In-kind Resources • Financial Resources

  6. SUSTAINABILITY • What would perfect sustainability look like to your coalition? • What would a complete lack of sustainability look like to your coalition? • If this was the last year of your DFC grant where does your coalition stand?

  7. CAN WE AGREE ON THIS? • Where your coalition falls on the first spectrum (fiscal agent partnership) will dramatically impact where your coalition falls on the second spectrum (sustainability). • Why?

  8. HOW CAN YOUR FISCAL AGENT HELP WITH COALITION SUSTAINABILITY? • Access funding streams that the coalition cannot get without it • Lead by example in committing to your sustainability plan (human, in-kind, financial resources)

  9. BASELINE - GOAL • Measure your baseline – where is your relationship at now? • Set a goal – where do you want your relationship in X number of years? • THINK ABOUT: • How do we get there? • What might we need to change to get there? • How can getting there fulfill a need for your fiscal agent? • Work towards it’s mission • Increased fiscal stability • Build relationships in community with potential donors or voters

  10. FISCAL AGENT ROLES • Makes sure grants are properly implemented • Follows and adheres to all funding requirements • Takes in coalition funds and disperses payments (keeps appropriate records) • Assures compliance for applicable laws • Says no when necessary CAN ALSO: • Actively participate on the coalition (just not a sector representative) • Help define goals and objectives for the coalition • Assist with the hiring of staff, supervision of staff and management of payroll of the staff • Lead by example

  11. COALITION ROLES • Complete and update Needs Assessment • Build Coalition Capacity • Guide Strategic Planning • Assist in Implementation of Activities • Serve as a Resource • Oversee Evaluation • Guide Sustainability • Focus on Cultural Competence HOW MIGHT THE FISCAL AGENT HELP?

  12. YOUR COALITION’S SUSTAINABILITY: ASK GOOD QUESTIONS 1. What is a major accomplishment your coalition could achieve that would impact your community for years after your coalition ended? 2. What resources would your coalition need to survive beyond DFC funding? What can your fiscal agent do to help you access these resources? 3. What are 3 potential funding sources for your coalition? What can your fiscal agent do to help you access this funding?
