FIS POINTS HARD TO EXPLAIN AT THE BEST OF TIMES
W HERE DO WE START ? W ITH THE FIS L IST @ FIS - SKI . COM
Who’s Who? Aksel Lund Svindal #1 in Downhill = 0 points Dustin Cook # 19 in Super G = 5.34 points Caeden Carruthers # 1829 in Slalom = 72.19 points
Geez, the F Factor Really? The F factor From first principles you lose 1 % of F Factor for every second you are behind the winner. It all comes down to speed of the event. Downhill – 1250 Slalom – 720 Giant Slalom – 980 Super G – 1080 Super C – 1150 So in Slalom 1.00 second = 7.20 points
Hi. I’m Dustin Cook I had half a good day. Aksel’s time was 1:26.35. My time was 1:27.55, just 1 second back. He scored a 0.00 and I scored 12.50 If I scored a 6.00 I’d by definition be # 31 in the world. But today I wasn’t that fast. Hey, but this is World Cup and I earned 80 World Cup points by winning a Silver.
The Winner Penalty is 0.00 My name is Britt Janyk and just finished the GS at the 2010 Olympics in Whistler. The guy at the start looked like Doc Brown. I am 2.68 seconds back and back and I scored a 16.27 Take 16.27 and my other lowest score points and I am 25 th in the world. Now I start with a lower number than 39
Race Penalty – What? The calculation to determine the PENALTY takes into account the FIS points of the best 5 racers in the race. It spits out the comparative skill of the winner against the best in the world. If I could explain the formula I’d be Doc Brown dangling from a chairlift.
So, whats the point? Take the penalty and add your race points to get your score. Race points are the points per second. So the winner gets compared to the rest of the world and you are compared to today’s winner. Simple? Try to explain this as cocktail party conversation. Probably towards the end of the party would be best.
So how does that work out for you? For homework read the Rules for FIS Points. And this is just the beginning. Up next: National Points World Cup Start List NorAm Rules University rules There is no end to thi ……….
