Firehouse Kitchen Renovations
The Baltimore City Department of General Services (DGS), the Mayor’s Office, City’s Solicitors Office, Fire Department, and local leaders in the business and philanthropic community have been working in collaboration for the past year to renovate 17 firehouse kitchens. The kitchen renovations will provide new, modern kitchens to Fire Department members, helping provide well-balanced, healthy meals throughout their shift.
The Firehouse Renovation Project was borne out of a conversation between Mayor Rawlings-Blake and Ron Shapiro, attorney and business leader. Mr. Shapiro partnered with T. Rowe Price Group Chairman Brian Rogers to inspire friends and fellow business leaders to sponsor much- needed renovations to firehouse kitchens.
The project was broken into 5 phases with 3-4 firehouses being completed in each phase. DGS designed each kitchen in-house, prepared the sites, bid and procured contractors, and members of the Fire Department performed demolition and painting to reduce costs on the renovations. Each site took an average of 65 days to complete.
