Evolution of the Federal Role in Transit • 1964 – Federal transit funding program created. The law prohibited FTA from directly regulating transit system operations • 1964-2012 – FTA primarily a funding agency • 2012 – MAP-21 law establishes FTA safety regulatory, training, inspection, investigation and vehicle standards program • 2016 – FAST Act 4
