  2. Aims • To introduce & clarify the role of ETF regional specialist leads • To provide an overview & taster of maths CPD in the region • To raise awareness of ETF online maths resources • To take feedback about how ETF & WMCETT can better meet the needs of the sector

Level 5 module for teachers of GCSE resits • Analysing GCSE course requirements • Engaging & motivating learners • Effective practice in teaching GCSE maths • International perspectives on maths teaching • Assessment for learning approaches • Effective use of ICT • Putting it together – course & session planning

Teaching new GCSE maths specifications • Aimed at new & potential GCSE maths teachers • Builds on successful approaches of Maths Enhancement Programme, but targets Foundation Tier • 3 x 1-day modules: – Number, Probability & Statistics – Ratio, Proportion & Algebra – Geometry & Measures • Available in Solihull, Dudley & Worcester

Mathematical Resilience • Aims to overcome learners deep-seated negative attitudes & anxiety about maths • Based on extensive research at University of Warwick & elsewhere • 1-day course provides an introduction (Oxford & Coventry) • 4-day course provides in-depth understanding based on coaching model (Worcester & Walsall)

  11. Mathematical resilience Four elements: • Growth mindset • Value, purpose or meaning • Personal agency, struggle & persistence • Inclusion, support & community

  13. Accessible & inclusive activities • Visual & enactive: not just abstract symbols • Low floor - high ceiling: open problems where everyone can begin at own level, but extends to more challenging maths • Meaningful: related to vocational learning, social practices & the real world
