Snacks and Water Bottles Snacks: Students may bring a healthy snack to school. It will be eaten during instructional time. All snacks should be small, healthy, dry, and finger friendly. Please be mindful of the snack you send if your child’s class contains an allergy. Water bottles: Students may bring water bottles to keep by their desk. Water bottles must have a sports top. (the kind that snap open and closed).
Flashlight Fun • Please send in a labeled flashlight with new batteries • For use during fun activities

Sight Words • Flashcards will be sent home at the beginning of every grading period. • Please study these with your child so they can recognize these words instantly. • They are also posted on our first grade website.

Math What does it include? • Numeracy focus to 120 • Organizing data • Skip Counting into tables and graphs • Addition and • Measurement • Place value subtraction strategies • Problem solving • Fact fluency • Money • Fractions • Time • Geometry
Math Numeracy • Counting forward/backward on and off the decade • Nearby numbers • Using ten frames, number lines, manipulatives and hundred charts • Counting on and counting back
Math What will the kids be doing? • Math tub games/hands-on activities • Independent work • Math journals • Working with manipulatives • Small groups
Math Flashcards • Similar to sight words but for math • Like sight words, they will need to recognize the facts and remember the answers quickly • These facts will be assessed and taken for a grade at the end of every nine weeks
Math Grades might include • Problem solving • Skills practice • Math journals • Small group observations • Independent Work • District Fact Fluency each grading period
Math Reversals • Beginning in January, students will begin to lose 1 point for reversals that do not change the value of the number • They will lose credit if the reversal changes the value of the number.
Science What does it include • Hands On Science Units of study: • Body systems • Classroom • Rocks/soil observations • Heat/temperature • Hands on • Plants stations • Life cycle (Chicks) • Matter/energy
Social Studies What does it include Lessons on: • Citizenship • Landforms • Customs and • Black history • Inventors traditions • U.S. symbols • Texas symbols
Science & Social Studies Grades E = 95 S = 85 N = 74 U = 65
• First grade will not be using planners. • All first grade students will have a blue take home folder. Please check their expectation card and sign nightly. • Graded work will be sent home in Tuesday folders. Please return the next day.

Reading Homework • 15 Minutes of Reading daily • Please read with your child or to your child! • You can read library books, leveled readers that come home, and/or Raz-Kids. *Information about Raz-Kids and leveled readers will be coming home soon!
• Each class will have a slightly different behavior management system which was explained in your child’s meet the teacher packet. • Behavior not meeting the school community agreements will be noted on the expectation card.
Top Dog of the Week • Every week a student from each class will be chosen as the Top Dog. • That week they will get to share the Top Dog poster they created. • This will look different in each classroom.
