Product Information - Technology When injected into the exhaust, DEF hydrolyses and forms ammonia. This triggers the chemical reaction that converts the NOx gases in the exhaust into harmless nitrogen and water (the Selective Catalytic Reduction process). = Exhaust Exhaust leaves the engine with the pollutants NOx and PM = Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) DEF injected into the exhaust stream Particulate Matter (PM) is trapped in the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPE) NOx PM DEF PM NOx Ammonia (NH 3 ) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) react in the catalyst to form Nitrogen and Water NH3 DEF solution ‘hydrolyzes’ into ammonia SCR (NH 3 ) which mixes with the exhaust N 2 H 2 O Catalyst 2
