Lisa’s PCP diagnoses her with depression. The PCP prescribed psychotropic meds…at an inappropriate dosage Lisa’s depression is causing her to irrationally think she’s being fired. She develops a plan to commit suicide and protect her family with life insurance benefits. Lisa should call IBH and receive the following support: Referral to a behavioral health specialist and a review of her medication regimen Coaching to develop stress management skills – Resilience Access to the My Stress Tools on the IBH website. Example of Employer Services Archie is a dependable, loyal supervisor at ACME Archie makes an inappropriate comment to a minority worker The employee quits and files a suit against ACME for unfair hiring practices and a hostile work environment Archie need training in diversity ACME needs professional consultations and guidance in deciding if Archie’s employment is worth the risk ACME needs a behavioral health mandatory referral policy and process to help employees learn appropriate behavior IBH staff clinicans do all this & use EAP visits in the referral
Mandatory Referrals …..are for behavioral or performance problems of a magnitude that compromises the ability of the individual to perform their duties or compromises safety. Mandated management referrals may be used to assess and address significant behavioral issues, or to evaluate one’s Fitness -for-Duty (FFD) when a question of safety is paramount. FFDs are usually for violations of the company drug free workplace or workplace violence policy.
Fitness for Duty Evaluates a person ability to safely to perform their duties in the workplace. Issues could include: Impairment Through Substance Use or Abuse e.g. Heroin addiction verses properly prescribed opioids Behavioral Issues and Antics that Impact Safety e.g. An employee just doesn’t play well with others or one who sells Tasers on the worksite Threats of Violence e.g. An employee, known to own a lot of weapons, gets so upset at a supervisor they say “I’m going to blow your head off in the parking lot!” Physiological Issues e.g. A normally reliable employee begins to miss steps in a manufacturing process because they have undiagnosed early-stage dementia IBH doctors consult with employers and arrange the necessary evaluations with local providers*
