  2. SUMMARY 1. Staff presented this material as an information item at the October 17, 2019 School Board meeting. 2. The Educational Specifications (Ed Specs) document was revised to clarify the difference between Planned Enrollment and Calculated Capacity (pages 21, 31, and 39).   3. PLANNING PARAMETERS 1. Planning parameters are aligned with school, APS and DOE strategic initiatives 2. Program and capacity analysis for the following instructional programs inform facility requirements in these Ed Specs: Program Seats Arlington Tech 600 TBD 1 800 CTE (from neighborhood HS) 2 300 Academic Academy 60 EL (formerly HILT) 70 PEP 70 1,900 Subtotal Planned Enrollment (Min.) Allowance for growth of CTE (from neighborhood HS), Academic Academy, EL 294 and PEP Programs____________________________ Total Calculated Capacity 2,194 1. Ed. Specs. assume the space requirements and facility needs are similar to those of the Arlington Tech program. 2.   5. SPACE PROGRAM 1. Quantity and size of individual spaces in the Ed Specs was determined using a variety of input that included: a. Arlington Career Center and Department of Teaching and Learning leaders b. Guidelines from the Virginia Department of Education c. Comparable facilities provided at other APS high schools d. Current best design practices for similar schools/programs e. Lessons learned from recent projects 2. Space program assumes that undersized and/or inefficient spaces within the existing building will be improved to reflect current requirements 3. Refinements to the space program will occur as part of the typical design process; which includes detailed floor plan review by staff at Arlington Career Center and Department of Teaching and Learning NOVEMBER 7, 2019 5 SCHOOL BOARD ACTION ITEM

  6. NEXT STEPS 1. November 2019 to February 2020 – Concept Design phase BLPC/PFRC meetings  Ed Specs refinement is expected during the phase as design options are developed 2. RECOMMENDATIONS Staff recommend the School Board take the following actions: • Approve the Arlington Career Center Expansion Educational Specifications document dated November 6, 2019 attached to this presentation. • Direct staff to provide an update on the Ed Specs (highlighting any refinements) concurrent with the proposed Concept Design in March 2020.
