Key Statistics - Employment • Population – 206,000 / 127,700 Working Age • 100,300 (77.3%) in employment (71.2% NE / 75.7% GB) • 9,300 (7.0%) self-employed (8.5% NE / 10.8% GB) • 77.2% females in employment (68.7% NE / 71.5% GB) • Higher numbers employed in professional occupations and health, business and administrative sectors • Gross weekly pay £576.2 (£531.1 NE / £587.0 GB)
Key Statistics - Skills • 33.6% with an NVQ4 and above (31.1% NE / 39.3% GB) • 76.8% with an NVQ2 and above (73.0% NE / 74.9% GB) • 7.2% with No Qualifications (9.5% NE / 7.8% GB) • Vacancies in last 12 months – Care Workers and home carers (235) and Nurses (201) • Employers with vacancies – NHS, NTC, Home Group • Key skills required – Customer Service, Teamwork and Teaching
Challenges • Whilst our NEET rates for 16-17 year olds remains low (2.4%), youth unemployment (18-24) is rising elsewhere and we need to be alert to this • Our numbers are stable, but the rate has risen slightly • Very tight labour market – pay and poverty • Pockets of deprivation • Key sectors requiring intervention – health and social care, retail and digital • External Factors!!
Opportunities • Engagement with business is strong on inward investment and recruitment • Cobalt, Quorum and Silverlink continue to attract investment • Availability of provision – employability and skills • Good education attainment and participation in learning • Areas where we are bucking the trend – NEET rates, Apprenticeship starts
