  1. ECE 6900 – Special Problems in Electrical Engineering: Broadband Communications Networks Chapter 0: Important information Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud http://www.cae.tntech.edu/~mmahmoud/ mmahmoud@tntech.edu

  4. Description Pre-requisite : Undergraduate probability. Aim s : - This is an introductory graduate course on broadband communication networks. - The aim of the course is to present the main facets of broadband communication networks, i.e., the issues of performance, network design, and protocols. - The emphasis in the course will be on protocols – performance - the basic building blocks of communication networks - how they are organized, the various functionalities that are needed for reliable communication - how to measure performance, and finally how to control and optimize them to obtain good utilization of resources and provide some performance guarantees. 0-3

  5. Description Aim s : - Technology is very fluid and changes annually, if not monthly - Purpose of this course is not to go into all the details of the current technologies and standards. It is rather to teach fundamentals, i.e., aspects of networking that are not likely to change. - Though there is a lot to learn through specific protocols and technologies… . This course is very beneficial to all students who wish to specialize in communications and networking. 0-4

  6. Course Outline 1. Introduction to broadband networks 2. Performance and QoS 3. Link layer and LANs 4. Network layer: IPv4, IPv6, addressing, routing, etc. 5. Transport layer: UDP , TCP 6. Application layer: HTTP , FTP , DNS, etc. (if time permits) 7. Mobile IP – Wireless networks – Security (if time permits) 0-5

  7. Course Textbook Required Textbook : None. The course slides should be enough Recom m ended Books : The following books cover the material to varying degrees: - A. Kumar, D. Manjunath, and J. Kuri: Communication Networking: An analytical approach, Morgan-Kaufman (Elsevier), 2004, ISBN 0-12-428751-4. - D. Bertsekas and R. Gallager; Data Networks, 2nd Edition, Prentice-Hall, 1992, ISBN 0-13- 200916-1 - J. Walrand and P . Varaiya, High Performance Communication Networks, 2nd ed., Morgan Kaufmann, San Francisco, 2000. - K. W. Ross: Multiservice Loss Models for Broadband Telecommunication Networks (Telecommunication Networks and Computer Systems), Springer-Verlag, 1995. (Circuit- switching) 0-6

  8. Course Evaluation - Problem sets will be handed out. Solutions will be posted on the course website. That will count for 2 0 % of the grade . - There will be one project that will count for 3 0 % of the grade . - There will be NO m idterm exam ination . The final examination will count for 5 0 % 0-7

  9. Project - To be done individually. - Like a survey paper – Read/ understand related proposed protocols – Summarize them - Make contribution. - Expectation 12-14 double column pages – Use IEEE transactions format - Grading : - 1/ 3 for writing (correct English - easy to read) + paper organization - 1/ 3 for the paper’s technical content – correct understanding. - 1/ 3 for contributions: comparison – simulation – your own graphs -mathematical model – proposing new improvement – discussions – expressing your opinions – criticisms – etc 0-8

  10. Project Aim : - You are grad student. Your main duty is doing research - Learn how to read/ write a paper - Self learning: understand papers by yourself - You may like the project topic and continue doing research in the same area - You may come up with new ideas or at least improvements Don’t copy and paste – use your ow n w ords - check the academ ic integrity site – this is a grave academ ic m istake 0-9

  11. Project How to do good research: - Read papers very very very carefully. - When you read a paper ask yourself: - What is the objective, e.g., proposing a link layer protocol. - What is new comparing to the existing works (contribution), e.g., larger throughput - lower delay – lower overhead - Learn how the authors decide the title – write the abstract – select the keywords – organize the paper – explain ideas to make them easy to understand – use graphs (sometimes one graph can better explain an idea than several paragraphs) --- 0-10

  12. Project - Identify the merits of the proposed protocol (e.g., low overhead - ) - Criticize the paper and see how others criticize it (e.g., high overhead – not applicable in some situations or scenarios ) -Think how to resolve these issues. You may come up with a simple improvement – you can think in combining two protocols together Steps : - Step 1 : Decide project title - form groups – submit to the TA a preliminary list of related papers (recent – IEEE journals and transactions) - get feedback . 0-11

  13. - Project can be any topic related to the course - Check the proposed topics posted online, however, you can choose a new topic with approval from me or the TA. Step 2 : submit a draft copy of the project – get feedback Step 3 : At the final exam: Deliver the final copy. Projects will not be accepted after the final exam day - You are welcome at any time to have discussion or consultation, either with me or the TA. - This could be a good opportunity to develop your research skills 0-12
