Calibration What is calibration? Calibration Check Calibration Trim Malaysia End-User Seminar 23 11 November 2009
Calibrate ANSI/ISA–S51.1–1979 (R1993) Calibrate: To ascertain outputs of a device corresponding to a series of values of the quantity which the device is to measure, receive, or transmit. Data so obtained are used to: 1) determine the locations at which scale graduations are to be placed; 2) adjust the output, to bring it to the desired value, within a specified tolerance; 3) ascertain the error by comparing the device output reading against a standard. Malaysia End-User Seminar 24 11 November 2009
Calibration - What does it mean? 1. Determine the locations at which scale graduations are to be placed; – Set the 4 mA and 20 mA points (range) – Scaling/ranging can be done remotely without applying input – Scale/range not applicable to most fieldbus transmitters 2. Adjust the output, to bring it to the desired value, within a specified tolerance; – Trim the output current – Need to connect a multimeter – Not applicable to fieldbus 3. Ascertain the error by comparing the device output reading against a standard. – Trim the sensor reading – Need to apply input (e.g. equalize and vent manifold to zero) – Is applicable to fieldbus Malaysia End-User Seminar 25 11 November 2009
Calibration for Fieldbus • Sensor Trim • Configure Range/Scale – If measurement reading is Setting wrong it must be corrected –Zero and Span • E.g. correct for mounting position • In PID block (valve or – From transducer block controller) – Need to apply input • In AI block for inferential • Done in the field measurements such as DP flow and DP level • Some transmitters may need range to operate • Cancel wet-leg etc. –Set the portion (range/scale) between sensor limits which is of interest for application –In function block –Just setting a value •Done remotely from control room Malaysia End-User Seminar 26 11 November 2009
Calibration Trim • Methods simplify complex tasks • Ensure correct procedure • Eliminates mistakes Malaysia End-User Seminar 27 11 November 2009
Field Calibration Trim Tools • Field Communicator – Plus calibrator – Clipboard for notes • Documenting calibrator – With Fieldbus interface – Mainly pressure and temperature Reduce Paper Work Malaysia End-User Seminar 28 11 November 2009
Malaysia End-User Seminar 11 November 2009 Handheld Communicator Field Work 29
Why do I need a handheld field communicator? • Field tasks • Laptop/tablet – Sensor trim – Heavy • Turn manifold – Moving parts – Cancel wet-leg – Usually not rugged • Verify empty – Not hazardous area – Valve stroking certified • See it move – Limited battery life – Repair • If it indeed failed Malaysia End-User Seminar 30 11 November 2009
Are Handhelds and Device Management Software The Same? • Information content & structure – Same, because determined by the device manufacturer, not the system/handheld • Look & feel – Slightly different, because dependent on the platform • Screen size, color, keyboard, mouse... • Features – Different • Device management software is permanently connected • Device management software has a database – Audit trail, scheduling, persistent data storage, manuals, other documents etc. Malaysia End-User Seminar 31 11 November 2009
Conclusion • You don’t have to go to the field as often – Diagnostics and configuration done remotely • You still need to go to the field sometimes • Working in the field is easier than in the past • Specialized tools and solutions for fieldbus are available • Fieldbus is not difficult Malaysia End-User Seminar 32 11 November 2009
