SEQUENCE FOR TRAINING 1 . Mark: “Good dog!” 2. Reward 3. Release: “Okay.” 4. No Reward Marker (NRM): “Oops!”
FOUR for FOUR • When teaching any new behavior, start at an easy level. • Get 4 correct responses in a row. • Then, you can increase the difficulty. • If your dog starts making mistakes, reduce the difficulty by one step and get 4 for 4.
SIT with AUTOHOLD Ask for Sit. Dog sits. Pause 1 second before you mark 1. ”Yes!" and reward. Say “OK” and get dog up. Get 4 for 4. 2. Increase to a 2-second pause. Get 4 for 4. 3. If dog breaks the Sit, reduce length of pause next 4. time. Gradually increase pause before rewarding. 5.
BREAKFAST IN BED 1. Dog hears trigger (doorbell) and you immediately announce “”Breakfast in Bed!” 2. Give Kong in bedroom while you secure door. 3. Dog must Sit to be released.
SIT AT DOOR 1. Walk dog to threshold. 2. Ask for Sit. OK to praise but no treat. 3. You cross threshold. 4. “OK” to release through threshold. * If dog gets up, “Oops.” Body block and reset. (Close door and start over.)
MANAGING JUMPING 1. Step on the leash. 2. Feed treats while person pets dog.
PLACE WITH DURATION 1. Lure dog onto mat. No verbal cue yet. 2. Once all four paws are on it, ask for a Sit or Down. 3. When he Sits, Mark and Reward. Release with “Okay.” 4. Get 4 for 4. Then say “Place” right before you lure him. 5. Get 4 for 4. Switch the treat to your other hand, hidden. Pointing hand is empty.
SIT TO GREET “Four on the Floor” 1. Ask dog to Sit as person approaches. 2. Rapid-fire reward dog as he continues to sit. 3. If dog gets up, the person turns away. Reset. 4. If dog remains sitting, he can be pet.

SIT DURING DISTRACTIONS Remember to: ● Ask for the Sit before dog gets excited. ● Continue rewarding through the duration of the distraction. If the distraction is too much for dog, give distance and regroup.
PLACE WITH DISTANCE 1. Continue with rule of 4 for 4. 2. Take small step away from mat. Give “Place” cue. 3. If dog hesitates, stay still and look at mat (not at dog).
FOOD BOWL ELEVATOR 1. Ask for a Sit. 2. Elevator goes down: slowly lower food bowl on floor. 3. If dog stands up, elevator (you) goes back up, and start over. 4. When bowl is on the floor, release with “Okay.”
