CURB Screening Questionnaire
ACES- Adverse Childhood Experiences ACEs are traumatic events that can have negative and lasting effects on health and behaviour. These include being sexually or emotionally abused or living in a house with domestic violence mental illness, alcohol and drug abuse or criminal problems (present or historically). The nature of the questions asked within the questionnaire have been selected due to research around the effects of ACES and our experience of working within children services, YOS, Early Help and Housing.
Living near to or moving due to gangs, war or violence… We acknowledge and understand that although young people and children may not be involved in gangs or violence, the witnessing of such, and knowledge of its prevalence can have an impact on their views about it and behaviour growing up.
Inappropriate touching or viewing and sharing of indecent images… • Research has shown that children who have unfortunately been sexually abused or exposed to inappropriate content can be more vulnerable to exploitation or grooming by other individuals or gangs. • Its potential impact on self esteem and worth can also make them more vulnerable to the above or engaging in unhealthy relationships when older.
Parenting, discipline, praise and rewards • Children's interpretation of some forms of discipline can impact how they perceive themselves or how they feel their parent or carer perceives them. • Lack of reward or praise can lead to children seeking praise, rewards or approval from elsewhere. This can leave them vulnerable to being groomed or seeking acceptance through other means.
Domestic Violence • This can be parent to child, child to parent, sibling to sibling. Regardless of the form in which the DV takes place they can all have an impact. • Exposure to violence can normalise this as a response when interacting with others. Additionally the built up feelings from what they experience can lead to an increase in aggression and inability to manage their emotions.
