Hunger & Poverty Statistics in Illinois Poverty In 2012, the official poverty rate in Illinois was 14.7% with 1.85 million people living in poverty The poverty rate in 2011 for children under age 18 was 20.7% Food Insecurity In 2011, 15.2% (1.95 million) of Illinois residents live in households that lack the means to get enough nutritious food on a regular basis Federal Food Assistance Programs in Illinois 874,109 households in Illinois received assistance from SNAP.
