  3. How Regional Engagement can support Global Engagement: India case study Traditional identification of international/ strategic partners = strategic herding? Partnership/Collaboration model with Nottingham City Council NCC broad objectives: • Attract foreign direct investment • Increase international trade • Support academic collaborations, business tourism • Grow Nottingham’s economy • Create jobs for local people • Position Nottingham as a Global City In partnership, we create a stronger brand/reputation for all involved. 31 August 2016 3

Why Chandigarh and Nottingham? • Large Indian business community in Nottingham with heritage links to Chandigarh/Punjab region • Alignment with key sectors (ICT, public sector, manufacturing, life sciences/healthcare) that are valuable to Nottingham in the economy that is the 5th largest investor in the UK • Fits with the UK’s wider efforts for a sustained relationship with India • Capital of Punjab; 1 million population; wealthiest city in India; ranked no 1 for quality of life • Several good universities – covering many subject areas; Panjab University: established 1882 (one of the oldest institutes in India) ranked No. 1 in India • Relatively low academic competition from the UK • Launchpad into other cities when the time is right 31 August 2016 4

Benefits? • City to city relationship gives special status and distinctive proposition • Offers a long-term strategic framework for developing meaningful partnerships • Prevents universities looking transactional when seeking partners • Builds mutual trust and respect with multiple partners (credibility…) • Local authorities fund or aid research with support from business • Civic engagement allows sharing of cities’ cultural and creative offering, broadening possibilities and raising profile • Profile = student recruitment The City can join everything up by bringing universities and business together to benefit all. 31 August 2016 5

India and China - some highlights for NTU Panjab University, Chandigarh: • Increased two-way mobility: Summer/Easter Schools; Cultural and Sport exchange; Work placements • Increased funding and research opportunities. Communication University of China (CUC): • Chinese MoE licensed joint institution; Centre for Broadcast Journalism • MA Broadcast Journalism, MA Media and Globalisation and MA Museum and Heritage Development (12 months at NTU) • Professional Doctorate in Journalism, Media and Communication Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU): • Mandarin scholarship programme • New joint Masters degree with UK placement opportunities To further support students at partner institutions, NTU is seeking to launch an Arts and Humanities Alumni Fellow Scheme in Beijing. 31 August 2016 6

Personalised Experience at Home A few examples • Virtual Mobility: Using social media to connect with global industry – BA Fashion Design – Students use digital research methods to understand the culture of a specific product and to reach out to consumers abroad, practising real interaction and in depth conversations with people with whom they have no physical relationships - develops empathy beyond students’ own socio -demographic and cultural groups and respect for cultural differences. • International Seminar on Cellular Biology Techniques in Animal Research: week long series of practical sessions and seminars delivered by visiting international faculty, including virtual interaction with their students – BSc Pharmacology – Student comments: “most enjoyable experience since coming to NTU”, “different style teaching and more independence in labs”, “understand issues on a more global scale”. 31 August 2016 8

Award winning Global Lounges Dedicated physical space on all three campuses – multifunctional hubs for • intercultural and international networking for all students and staff (free coffee and tea; weekly community lunches!) Resources and advice on mobility opportunities • Development of international community • Results: after 3 years and an investment of £10k this academic year:  10k+ students attending over 150 events (doubling from 14/15)  10% uplift in study abroad (volunteering, summer schools, language learning) in 15/16  NUS UKCISA Internationalisation Awards 2016: Innovation in Internationalising the Student Experience Excellence in International Student Support  WhatUni Student Choice Awards 2016: Best UK University for International Students - This award is extra special as it's based on the opinions of our students! 31 August 2016 9

  10. What do students think? “Global Lounge is the one place the university should keep if they ever want to change things. The staff here are so friendly, I love the activities that go on. It is a 10/10 from me”. “Global Lounge is a valuable provision for students and staff to get an understanding of exposure beyond their home country. Whether you’re a home student or not it is a magnet that promotes integration of countries in one place with a common purpose which is education”. “The Global Lounge is an enrichment to the experience of Uni, bringing with it a Global Integration of people, communities, countries and the world! That’s fairly reflected in what Global Lounge offers in its services, provision and staff representation”. 31 August 2016 10
