Coffee with a K Grad Handbook Alumni Admission Volunteer Program
Coffee with a K Grad Goals • Develop personal relationships with students and their families • Provide prospective students with an off-campus connection to Kalamazoo College • Obtain supplemental information about prospective students • Gain an idea of the prospective student’s level of interest in Kalamazoo College • This is NOT an evaluative measure used to determine admissibility to the College
Setting up a Coffee • Register online (include the name of a coffee shop) • Your availbility will be advertised to prospective students in your area • You will receive an email notification when a student registers
Materials and Preparation • Reference Packet for review in case you need to brush up on facts. • Sample Interview Questions to ask the student. • Table Tent and Nametag • Postcards to send after the interview
Words of Wisdom • Buy the student a drink, even if they insist they don’t need anything. (K will reimburse you) • Meetings should last between 45 and 60 minutes. • Meet with students one on one, but allow time for parents to join the conversation if they come. • Be prepared to ask the students questions – they will likely be nervous!
Words of Wisdom • Share your story! • Speak from experience, but try to remain objective about the school. • It’s OK to say “I don’t know.” • Do not intimate that a student will be admitted even if you think they are a good fit.
After the Coffee • You will receive an email with a short feedback form. Please complete it as soon as possible. • Send a postcard to the student as a follow-up to your meeting. • Feel free to share your contact information with the student, though this isn’t required.
