  1. CNS Fusion Science and Technology Division Blair Bromley, Peter Schwanke Reactor Physicists, Fusion Enthusiasts bromleyb@aecl.ca, Peter.Schwanke@candu.com October 21/22, 2011 1

  2. History  Official Division of CNS • Since 2010 August.  Revitalization started in 2009. • Evolved from Fusion Committee.  Had become dormant.  Canada withdrew from ITER.  Federal/provincial governments reduced support for fusion research since 2001. 2

  3. Goal  To help facilitate the re-birth of fusion science and technology R&D in Canada. • Re-build domestic activity in Fusion R&D. • Encourage international cooperation.  Encourage technical communication. • Scientific researchers • Educators, entrepreneurs, enthusiasts. • Government officials, etc. 3

  4. Basic Fusion Reactions 4

  5. Fuel for 1 GWe-Year 5

  6. Recent FSTD Success  CNS-FSTD helped organize fusion technical session at the CNS 2011. • Six technical papers. • Participants from across Canada, and India. • First dedicated fusion technical session at a CNS conference in more than ten years. 6

  7. ASME Codes for Fusion Reactors 7

  8. Prof. Kalra / IIT - Kanpur  Non-Maxwellian ion distributions in fusion plasmas of D-D / D-T.  Modeling MHD flow in fusion reactor breeding blankets. Typical ITER-TBM(Test Blanket Module) ** ITER * ** Report No. UCLA-FNT-216, Volume-1:Technical plan and Cost 8 Estimate Summary * http://www.iter.org

  9. Robert Fedosejevs / U. Alberta  Inertial Confinement Fusion R&D 9

  10. Doug Richardson / General Fusion  Acoustically-driven Magnetized Target Fusion concept.

  11. Liu, Hirose - U. Sask.  STOR-U / Tokamak research. 11

  12. Ongoing Activities / Actions (1)  Recruit new chair for CNS-FSTD. • Rotation is healthy. Fresh perspective. • Ideally a person doing work in fusion.  Identify/recruit interested CNS Members • Also members of CNS-FSTD (no extra charge).  Recruit volunteers to assist. • Rewarding and fun. Fun is found in Fusion. 12

  13. Ongoing Activities / Actions (2)  Establish FSTD Organizing Committee. • Recruit committee members.  Develop updated email list for fusion researchers and enthusiasts. • Encourage to join CNS and CNS-FSTD. 13

  14. Ongoing Activities / Actions (3)  Plan for a Canadian Fusion Workshop • Stand-alone meeting, or: • Embedded meeting following a CNS Annual Conference.  Identify FSTD Representative to serve: • CNS Annual Conference Organizing Committee • Technical Program Committees. 14

  15. Ongoing Activities / Actions (4)  Organize a fusion technical session at CNS Conference. • Recruit fusion papers. • Plenary session speakers.  Organize tours for fusion-related research facilities in Canada and abroad. • U. Saskatchewan STOR-U, U. Calgary • General Fusion (B.C.) • MIT, U. Wisconsin, Princeton U., U. Rochester • JET (Culham), ITER (Cadarache), NIF (LLNL) 15

  16. University of Saskatchewan  Plasma Physics Laboratory / STOR-U 16

  17. University of Alberta  Laser facilities. 17

  18. General Fusion 18

  19. Joint European Torus (JET) 19

  20. ITER / Tokamak 20

  21. Cadarache / ITER Site 21

  22. National Ignition Facility (NIF) 22

  23. Ongoing Activities / Actions (5)  Liaison / collaborate with the Plasmas Physics Division of the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP). • Face-to-face meetings. • Opportunities to cooperate.  Set up FSTD/fusion webpage. • On CNS website. 23

  24. Ongoing Activities / Actions (6)  Prepare a CNS position paper on fusion science and technology. • Get input from researchers across Canada to develop this.  Set up a fusion blog / discussion group for fusion in Canada. • Maybe a Facebook Page. • Other ideas welcome. 24

  25. Feedback / Suggestions  We need you. • Become a volunteer.  Help with small tasks and projects. • Even a few hours a year can make a difference.  Contact us: • Blair Bromley – bromleyb@aecl.ca • Peter Schwanke – Peter.Schwanke@candu.com 25
