High School vs. Middle School • Block Schedule (4 classes each semester/8 a year) • High school has End Of Course (EOC) tests for some classes that count 20% of their final course average • One hour lunch with WIN Time • You have your own personal school counselor through graduation • Opportunity to take college (Dual Enrollment) courses beginning in 10th grade • You must EARN CREDITS to graduate!

Transition to High School • 8 th grade assembly about how to get involved in high school on January 22 nd • Parent Night on January 23 rd at 6:30 pm at HHS in the cafeteria • Honors Night on February 4 th at 6:30 pm at HHS • 8 th grade tours the high school on February 10 th and 11 th • Advisement for 8 th graders during homeroom on Feb. 3 rd and 4 th • Registration nights on February 6 th and 10 th at HHS from 6:00-7:30 pm

Decisions for Freshman • Do you need support for math? • Are you interested in Honors classes? • Band, Chorus, Drama, Art, Academic Electives? • Career Programs • Weight Training encouraged for students involved in athletics (open for anyone) • Is there something unique that you would like to plan during your high school career? • Are you interested in Dual Enrollment ?

Honors • Honors Night on Monday, February 4 th at 6:30 pm in the HHS theater • Honors classes are offered for academic classes (9 th Literature, Algebra, American Government/Civics, Physical Science or World History) • More challenging, accelerated, demanding • Pathway to Advanced Placement classes (college credit in high school) in sophomore, junior, and senior year. • The BEST way to prepare for Four Year University/College

Attend and Graduate! • High School dropouts earn $8,000 a year less than high school graduates and $26,500 a year less than college graduates. • A high school dropout will earn $200,000 less than a high school graduate and almost $1,000,000 less than a college graduate. • 67 % of inmates in America’s state prison are high school dropouts . • High school dropout commit 75% of crimes in the United States. • High School graduates have better health and a longer life expectancy (college educated women live 9.3 years longer than those who drop out, the difference is 11.9 years in men).

HOPE Scholarship • Students start earning a college scholarship their first day in 9 th grade (8 th grade classes for high school credit do not count toward HOPE) • Academic classes in your Freshman year will count toward their GPA (Grade Point Average) • HOPE scholarships are awarded with 3.0 (B) or higher GPA • Students must take 4 “rigor” classes to qualify (listed on website & student packet)

Core GPA for Hope • Math, Science, Social Studies, English and Foreign Language classes “count” in determining your Core Grade Point Average • No weighting of AP or Honors Classes • Calculating Core GPA: Average your grades (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0) If your Report Card had • 5 A’s • 7 B’s • 3 C’s • 1 F These grades would result in a 2.9 Core GPA!

GET INVOLVED! • Band • Athletics • Cheerleading • Dance • Chorus • Drama • Journalism • Career Clubs (FFA, FCCLA, HOSA, FBLA, SkillsUSA) • Other Clubs (Cinematic Club, Nerd Herd, Archery Club, Science Club, Book Club, Walking Club, Karaoke Club, Outdoor Club, Partner’s Club, Sound and Vision, Art, Finer Things Club,Writing Club, Mock Trial, 4-H, etc.) • JROTC at LFO or RHS

Things I wish every parent knew • Parents welcome at all school assemblies • Schedule appointments between 10:30 and 1:00/attendance by block • No student age visitors during school day • Credit Recovery is offered for students who fail a class • WIN Time during lunch will make a difference! • Teachers are willing to help! • There are a lot of options for Junior/Senior year • Good attendance/being on time are keys to success! • The value of your relationship with the school counselor • Plan ahead for unique course options • Plan ahead for Dual Enrollment • Students cannot drop Honors or AP classes after May 22nd

  22. Get an Early Start on High School! If you take Band and Chorus classes or are an athlete taking weight training, scheduling can be difficult. Get a head start by taking PE/Health class during the summer through Catoosa Online!

  23. On-Line Registration • Students can register for classes through their student portal account, similar to parent portal. • During Advisement, students will be trained on how to register for classes. • Students will choose 8 classes and 3 alternates • On-Line Registration ends February 14th • Help is available at HHS on February 6 th and 10 th at HHS from 6:00-7:30

  24. During the registration process you will: • Sign up for classes for next school year • Look at a high school track sheet • Develop a 4 year plan • Plan on meeting Hope rigor requirements • Get a feel for which classes you will take each year in high school • Begin to understand your options and what you can do to get the most out of high school
