Research in Naviance o See how your credentials stack up compared to each college class profile o Use the “ scattergram ” Visit the campus Talk to college reps, college students, parents, counselors Does the college offer what you’re interested in studying? Does the college “fit” you, your academic interests, social interests, financial situation, etc.? Enter your colleges of interest into Naviance
1. Complete the college application — usually two options o College website https://www.iupui.edu/ http://cms.bsu.edu/ • Unique to each college/university – official site ends in “. edu ” • “Admissions” or “Prospective Students” • Follow instructions for a Freshman or First-time college student • Ball State, ISU, IUPUI, Ivy Tech • Fees usually apply o Common App http://www.commonapp.org/ • As name implies, one COMMON application that can be submitted to multiple participating colleges and universities • Must complete FERPA (Educational Rights Act) • Must “invite” your counselor to complete the LN side of your application • Colleges/universities may require an additional “supplement” • Purdue*, Butler, Miami*, IU (*Common App exclusive) • Fees apply when submitting the application, Common App is free
2. You MUST send your LN transcript to every college/university to which you apply Admissions offices will review your performance in high school for rigor of coursework, grades, GPA Every student must create an account at www.parchment.com Follow the instructions for Parchment and you will link your account to Lawrence North, allowing your counselor to send your transcripts to the schools you indicate Parchment is USUALLY free, though some colleges/universities will charge you a small fee, o $3-5.00
3. You must send your ACT and/or SAT scores to the college(s) of interest ~Send scores for “free” when you register for the test < 4 colleges/universities are included per test (use them before or lose them and have to pay) ~You may order scores for each college of interest AFTER your test results are back <Usually $10+ per test, per school ~SUPERSCORING is possible with many schools +Strong test scores can provide scholarship opportunities+ <Meet all deadlines to be considered for scholarships
ACT and SAT are equally valued for admission purposes If you’ve already tested… o Compare your score(s) to the profile at each college of interest o “Middle 50%” are typically reported o If you are not in the “safe zone”, you may want to retest ASAP If you’ve NEVER tested and plan to attend college… o Get registered for either or both tests ASAP o Study guides are available online and on Naviance o SAT registration: www.collegeboard.org Next test is October 7 th and scores CAN be available for November 1 st Early Action o ACT registration: www.actstudent.org Next test is October 28 th which will not provide scores in time for Nov 1 st Early Action, but will have scores back in plenty of time for “regular decision” purposes

Payment for each college application o Most colleges charge a fee to process your application o Fee Waiver • Free/Reduced lunch student • Financial hardship • 21 st Century Scholars • If you used a waiver for SAT/ACT, you will likely qualify for a fee waiver • Contact to your counselor for additional information College GO! DEADLINES o Research the deadlines for the college(s) of interest – each college sets their own o “Early Action” is commonly November 1 st — check YOUR college to be sure o “Early Decision” is binding…what does that mean? o Automatic Scholarships — know if offered and when application must be submitted for consideration o Submit COMPLETE APPLICATIONS — did you submit all required components of your application by the indicated date???
EMAIL — adults use email in their daily communication o College admissions offices rely upon email communication o Check your email DAILY and respond in a timely manner o Communicate PROFESSIONALLY o Does your email account need to be professionalized? • bratbabygirl2000@gmail.com baller4life01@aol.com Communicate with COUNSELOR and any TEACHER you’d like to write a “Letter of Recommendation” o Talk with your counselor about your plans and intended schools o ASK the teacher in person and provide a RESUME o RESUME should also be provided to counselor (via Naviance) o Ask only if you NEED a letter of rec…many apps do NOT require one
TODAY o CREATE YOUR PARCHMENT ACCOUNT • www.parchment.com and follow prompts for NEW ACCOUNT • Get out your Chromebook and set up Parchment now Fall o Complete and submit applications o Wednesday, October 25 th — SENIOR EXPLORATION DAY • Away from the LN campus • College Visit, Job Shadow, Community Service Day • All seniors MUST submit activity on Google Form starting Sept 1, 2017 o October 1, 2017 – FAFSA OPENS Winter o Focus on Finances — FAFSA, Scholarship completion, etc. Spring o College decision — May 1 st is National Decision Day o Order FINAL TRANSCRIPT for college of attendance***REQUIRED o Graduation — June 6, 2017
Common App Help Sessions o 1 st Wednesday of September — 6th, October — 4th and November — 1 st o Counselors in Main Counseling Office each block — use your CCR, 8:15 a.m. or 3:50 p.m. o Set an appointment with your assigned counselor o Set an appointment with Mrs. Anderson Write your resume — use SENIO NIOR R RESUME SUME in Naviance Use Naviance as an organizational tool Steady progress — use an hour every Saturday to complete applications rather than cramming in one massive session the day before apps are due
