Why ? According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), more than 33% of children and adolescents were recorded as being overweight or obese in 2012. In San Mateo County: Overweight: 18.1% of children 2-4 years and 23.6% of adolescents 5-19 years Obese: 18.1% of children 2-4 years and 20.4% 5-19 of adolescents years
N Fair Oaks Unincorporated Overweight: 44% Obese: 25% Diabetes: 7% 5th, 7th, 9th graders: overweight: 26% Residents live 10.4 yrs less than average SMC resident Death is due to Heart disease, Cancer and Hypertension. Overview of Built environment: Access to parks: few live with in 1/4 mile , 16% within 1/4 mile of a park incl school grounds, 0.03 acres of parks/ 100 residents, no joint use agreement Access to healthy food: most enjoy access to healthy food: a little <50% in 1/4 mile to grocery store with fresh fruit and veg, 85% within walking dist to fast food American Heart Association, 2001

STRATEGIES Keep fruits and vegetable in plain view so they are easy to see Add fruits and vegetables to every meal Try different fruits and vegetables Prepare meal at home and eat together as a family Make half your plate vegetables On Budget? Frozen vs canned Seasonal Buy at your local farmer’s markets
Can watching TV or spending too much time in front of a computer cause obesity? YES! According to the Institute of Medicine, children and adolescents watch thousands of advertisements which influence the consumption of high caloric foods and beverages that have little to no nutrition. On average, children who watch TV commercials advertising food consume 45% more snacks The Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children 2 and under do not watch television

Healthy Weight Collaborative Our Collaborative Mission: We will support healthy weight in children and their families, across the lifespan, in San Mateo County and increase health equity, especially in disadvantaged population. We will provide it in a culturally competent way using quality improvement data to guide our work. The San Mateo County Healthy Weight Collaborative’s 5210 Health Goals and Habits Program is a project of the National Initiative Children’s Healthcare Quality and Human Resources Services Administration. HWC has made a commitment to provide national evidence based common messaging, common assessment and care plan as well as supporting policy around built environment.
