  5. eHealth Foundations The eHealth Foundations combine the basic technologies of unique identification to provide a safe and secure method of exchanging healthcare information i.e.( identification, authentication and encryption) Operated by the Department of Human Services (Human Services) which allocates a Healthcare unique 16-digit number (a Healthcare Identifier) to individuals using healthcare services Identifiers and their practitioners and healthcare organisations.   8. The eHealth Record System (PCEHR) The eHealth Record is a secured electronic summary of a patient’s health records. The eHealth record system provides an active online record from different sources that over time will follow patients as they move through Australia’s health system. The eHealth record does not replace existing patient records.   10. Is the eHealth record system secure? How is access to a patient record controlled? A Consumer can control the privacy of the information contained in their eHealth record: • Health information and documentation access controls • Audit trail and notifications The eHealth record system includes features that protect the security of a patient's personal information. Those features are: • Verification on who is accessing the patient's record • Verification on which healthcare professional is uploading health information • Information transmitted across networks is encrypted and arrives at its destination without interference.   12. How do I access the eHealth Record? Consumers Individuals can access their health record via the consumer Consumer Portal portal. Consumers are able to contribute to their health record by inputting personal health notes, medications and allergies. The my child’s eHealth record app is for consumers with children under the age of 14 years. It allows parents and Mobile Application authorised representatives to access the child’s eHealth record and and view information about the child’s development. The Provider Portal is view only. Healthcare providers can view Provider Portal Providers and download a patient’s health information but cannot contribute to it. Healthcare providers with access to PCEHR conformant Conformant Clinical software are able to contribute to the patient’s eHealth record Software by uploading clinical documents via their software. 12 National E-Health Transition Authority Draft – Not for distribution www.nehta.gov.au

  17. How do you access an eHealth record? (via Provider Portal) There are 2 ways to access the eHealth record 1. Via your clinical software such as Medical Director or Best Practice 2.
