  22. WHAT IS MEDIA MENTORSHIP? A media mentor: • supports children & their families in their media decisions & practice around media use. • has access to and shares recommendations for and research on children’s media use.

  27. A Brief History: • Formerly the Carnegie Medal for Notable Videos • Transitioned to the Excellence in Early Learning Digital Media Award in 2017 • Criteria acknowledges American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for children’s media use

Criteria: Media or content shall be evaluated based on the following criteria: ● Effective utilization of selected platform(s) ● Created or underwent a significant content change or update within the award year ● Meets high aesthetic and technical standards ● The skills required to navigate the media should be appropriate and suitably challenging for the intended audience ● Facilitates active and creative use by children ages 2-8 in exemplary ways ● Respects the early learning audience’s intelligence and imagination by offering a rich and diverse experience ● Allows for meaningful joint media engagement, co-viewing, shared play experiences and/or guided play ● Media reflects/embodies its stated mission and purpose

History ● Notable Children’s Digital Media (NCDM) = expanded version of former Great Websites committee ● Charge : To evaluate, select, annotate and present a list of notable digital media of interest to children (ages 0-14) which is updated on a continual basis ● Inaugural committee convened 2017-2018; first list published April 2018, second list forthcoming ● First committee focused exclusively on free apps. Future lists will broaden to include more forms of digital media

What is “Digital Media?” ● From the ALSC Board: “any real -time, dynamic, and interactive media content or product that is available via personal electronic device across multiple platforms that enables and encourages active engagement and social interaction while developmentally appropriately informing, educating, and/or entertaining”

  36. NCDM Criteria ● Design and Stability : Is it easy to navigate? Functional? Attractive? Does it load without problems? Does it crash? ● Authorship : Is the creative team diverse? Is there a way to ask questions/provide comments? Are sources cited? ● Purpose: Does the content enrich the user’s experience and expand the imagination? Does it provide coviewing? Shared play support? ● Content: Age-appropriate? Regularly updated? Is the information accurate/accessible?
