  1. ALTERNATIVE ENERGY PRESENTATION Alistair Johnson Designer of THE TIG RIG RETROFIT SAIL SYSTEM

  2. A) THE TIG RIG RETROFIT SAIL Tig Rig array on Green Dolphin 575 Handymax SYSTEM • Self contained units • Fixed mounting points – interconnecting rails • 360 deg rotation, reefing in 10ths. • Key automated mechanical safety overrides • Universal mounting for masted devices • Out of way in port

  3. A) THE TIG RIG RETROFIT SAIL SYSTEM • Self contained units • Fixed mounting points – interconnecting rails • 360 deg rotation, reefing in 10ths • Key automated mechanical safety overrides – reefing & mast release • Out of way in port • Universal mounting for masted devices

  4. A) THE TIG RIG RETROFIT SAIL SYSTEM • Self contained units • Fixed mounting points – interconnecting rails • 360 deg rotation, reefing in 10ths • Key automated mechanical safety overrides – reefing & mast release • Out of way in port • Universal mounting for masted devices

  5. A) THE TIG RIG RETROFIT SAIL SYSTEM • Self contained units • Fixed mounting points – interconnecting rails • 360 deg rotation, reefing in 10ths • Key automated mechanical safety overrides – reefing & mast release • Out of way in port • Universal mounting for masted devices

  6. A) THE TIG RIG RETROFIT SAIL SYSTEM • Self contained units • Fixed mounting points – interconnecting rails • 360 deg rotation, reefing in 10ths • Key automated mechanical safety overrides – reefing & mast release • Out of way in port • Universal mounting for masted devices

  7. A) THE TIG RIG RETROFIT SAIL SYSTEM • Self contained units I HAVE MY FIRST CLIENT • Fixed mounting points – interconnecting rails Well nearly • 360 deg rotation, reefing in 10ths • Key automated mechanical safety overrides – reefing & mast release • Out of way in port • Universal mounting for masted devices

  8. B) ENERGY: CAPITAL VS CURRENT • Business - capital to set up – must lead to sustainable current income • Fossil fuel = ancient solar • Solar = current – and on US delivers 10,000 times US electricity consumption • Access Solar direct – panels or through weather – wind and wave • Challenge is to make this transition from capital to current energy

  9. C) EARTH INC AND INTERGALACTIC BANK • Earth Inc visit to Intergalactic Bank • EI – Can we please have extension on our capital? • IB - How long until you are sustainable in current energy? • EI – Err we don't know • IB - Next! • And as EI limp out of the room they stop and say • EI – Well can we have another planet then?

  10. D) BASIC BUSINESS ANALYSIS • Establish the replacement cost/alternative sourcing of your key inputs • Plan to transition from capital to current • Earth Inc has not done either • Earth Inc is not a proper business • Our entire industrialised society is subsidised • Alternative energy about making this critical transition

  11. E) THE TIMES THEY ARE CHANGING • October 2018: IPCC report – 12 years • And: Nobel Economics prize: Nordhaus, climate change theorist; Romer, state technology intervention advocate • Tipping point of public opinion – political shift and on to legislation • Difficult to say when and opposition strong – and we are all guilty, all deniers • But there are hard deniers – actively denying the science • They are now alarmed and despondent – ‘it's too late and no point trying anything – party harder’ – utterly spoilt • These are society's 'winners' – 'survival of the fittest' people – ready to colonise Mars • In this crisis, like war - deserters. Pitiful when 1 st to run are the Officers.

  12. F) THE RIGHT BALANCE (SHEET) • Radical theorist's paper on getting business to value Amazon rain forest • Different branches of industry = different yield rates = lower interest /bonds • Common good infrastructure – longest return, 40-50yrs, lowest rates – govt bonds • How to value common good of Amazon forest? Outside any single govt or time frame • Challenge to put Amazon forest on company balance sheets/tax returns • Identity of the theorist?

  13. F) THE RIGHT BALANCE (SHEET) • Identity of the theorist: John Shepard Reed • Former head of Citicorp and NY Stock Exchange – ultimate insider • Describing him as a radical – deliberate to make the point that the identity of the messenger affects the way we hear the message • In fact raised in Brazil and Argentina – outsider perspective

  14. G) DISRUPTIVE TECHNOLOGY • Wind assist for ships is not disruptive now • With change in political economy it may become so

  15. H) DEPRECIATION AND TAX WRITE OFFS • Tig Rig business plan – simple rental – units still yielding beyond tax write off • Depreciation/tax write offs came out of rivalrous European states harmonising private domestic business w national strategic goals • Nation states - drivers of business for centuries

  16. I) BUSINESS ERRORS AND FALSE DISTINCTIONS • Hard deniers claim sustainability is un business like – from people who i) ignore capital energy problem ii) haven't done proper energy replacement cost analysis. They fail basic business tests • Claim false distinction between govt and business • Govt intervention has always been directly critical to business • Popular sentiment will change political policy • Adding common good and energy to balance sheets critical for our future • In that future wind assist can become disruptive

  17. J) ENABLING THE ADDICTS (ALL OF US) • Boss of Shell last week advocating reforestation – new Amazon rainforest • Brazil’s presidential candidate intent on destroying the forest we have • Shell boss – it's not enough to do little bit of wind & solar. Deeper change • Happy meal toys. Oil from ME-China- US/Eu-kids play with 20mins – landfill. MADNESS • Works now but if energy properly valued it would stop - Nordhaus’s proposition • Govt direction – Romer’s proposition

  18. K) THE GROWN UP REBUTTAL • Advocate for sustainability - face criticism and respond • Hard deniers claims to business competence are bust – they fail basic tests • Hard deniers frame politics/govt as opposed to business – in fact the two are symbiotic • Neither deny nor try to run - do the grown up thing and let’s fix this
