The basics - You will apply to Joint Service Graduate Military Education Selection Board (JSGMESB) and NRMP (civilian match) - Timeline is early for JSGMESB - Health Professions Education Requirements Board (HPERB) determines residency needs
The basics - You may match into a: - Categorical military residency - Categorical civilian deferred residency (civilian program pays you) - Categorical civilian sponsored residency (AF pays for you to train civilian, you incur additional ADSC) - Military PGY-1 year, then reapply next year or do flight medicine - Civilian “deferred” PGY-1 year, then reapply or flight med
Timeline - Late June/early July (3rd/4th yr) – HPERB results released - Late June/early July (3rd/4th yr) – applications & instructions emailed - Late summer (4th yr) – interview ADT - Early Sept (4th yr) – core application due (nothing is electronic) - Early Oct – weight statement due (be within your allowable weight), letters of rec due (2) - Late Oct – step 1 & 2 scores due, application closes - Early Nov – Dean’s letter & transcript due - Late Nov – JSGMESB meets - Mid Dec – match results!
JSGMESB Board comprised of program directors and specialty consultants - Scoring: - Pre-clinical years – up to 2 points, includes Step 1 - Clinical years – up to 2 points, includes Step 2 - Previous internship/flight medicine – complicated - Overall potential – up to 5 points, includes letters of rec - Bonus points: - Research – up to 4 points for multiple publications in peer reviewed journals - Prior military service (>2 yrs active duty) – 2 points for medical AFSC, 1 point for non-medical
ERAS & NRMP - Apply to categorical and transitional/PGY-1 programs - Register for NRMP ($50 for early registration) - AFIT will reimburse for up to $325 total for both ERAS & NRMP - Recommend being up-front with civilian programs about the possibility of military matching if they ask - If you put civilian interviews off until after military match day, you may save yourself travel costs – may or may not work depending on your specialty, competitiveness, etc.
Tips - Be proactive – - Put military deadlines & ERAS deadlines on your calendar early - Make phone calls, keep copies, set alarms for yourself - They will find a way to mess up your stuff if you let them - Your AFPC POC - Matt Kush, (210) 565-0656
Tips - What you can do NOW (T3s): - Schedule your military away(s)/interview ADT - Schedule your Step 2 CS (takes forever to get results after you take it, so do it early) - Start asking for letters of recommendation – you don’t want to scramble at the last minute - Start rough notes for your military personal statement (constrained to 1 page) - Download and look over last year’s app
