Prevention and Health Promotion Administration MISSION AND VISION MISSION The mission of the Prevention and Health Promotion Administration is to protect, promote and improve the health and well-being of all Marylanders and their families through provision of public health leadership and through community-based public health efforts in partnership with local health departments, providers, community based organizations, and public and private sector agencies, giving special attention to at-risk and vulnerable populations. VISION The Prevention and Health Promotion Administration envisions a future in which all Marylanders and their families enjoy optimal health and well- being. 2

Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans National Guidelines and Recommendations for physical activity: • Adults: At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity, or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity. • Children: 60 mins (1 hour) or more of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity daily; with a variety of enjoyable physical activities (children aged 3-5 should be active throughout the day). https://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/basics/index.htm 4

  7. Why walking? • It is free. • Does not require any special skills and is usually modifiable for all populations. • Does not require a gym membership or expensive equipment. • Has several proven health benefits. 7
