  1. Accessibility Advisory Committee March, 2014 Bhavana Nelliparambil Manager, Standards, PMPS, GO Capital Infrastructure 1

  2. Accessibility at GO  One of the guiding principles of the Design Requirement Manual and Static Signage Catalogue.  Step free access to and from public areas and the accessible rail car.  Equivalent access is integrated for those with special needs, that include:  Mobility devices  Hearing or sight impairments  Elderly or ill  Travel with children 2

  3. Challenges  Consistency in Application of Accessibility Standards  Our stations all being built at different times  Grandfathering of codes  Different versions of standards and other considerations – Heritage etc,.  Multiple capital projects  Capital Condition Surveys  Inventory where locations have standard variations  We establish projects to address any gaps 3

  4. Standard Development Process Design Development Identify Accessibility requirements at Design Brief Stage Design Technical design Quality Lessons learned reviews Assurance Initiate and Develop Standard Standard Established 4

  5. Design Requirements Manual (DRM) PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS  Governed by OBC, AODA and industry best practice  Tailored to suit all customer needs and site conditions  Design submissions are reviewed by Standards for quality assurance and technical input  Stakeholder input on all Accessibility requirements and technical reviews. 5

  6. Accessibility a Guiding Principle in the DRM  Design Requirement Manual (DRM) section.  Icon to identify accessible infrastructure elements throughout the design guidelines document.  Accessibility features span all sections of the DRM. 6

  7. Static Signage Catalogue  Design criteria for static signs include best practices and compliance with OBC , AODA , FLSA (French Language Services Act) and corporate branding standards.  Provisions are made in the design of stations and facilities to ensure that they all have an accessible route.  Features on the accessible route are to meet the conditions listed above and be accompanied with appropriate signage.  In general, accessible signs follow CSA, AODA guidelines; interior signs shall have a matt finish & exterior signs shall have a retro-reflective finish complete with reduced glare. 7

  8. Gap Analysis - AODA Critical Changes to the DRM  Critical Changes to the AODA Integrated Accessibility Standards were updated in the DRM.  Outlined below are the changes: Ramps Accessible Parking Depressed Curbs Old: Ratio of 1:12 Old: Previously one type of Old: Directional grooves accessible parking. Current : Ratio of Current : Tactile warning Current : Two types of Accessible ramp slope 1:15 Parking, Type A and Type B 8

  9. Gap Analysis - AODA Critical Changes to the DRM contd…. Waiting Areas: Recreational Trails leading to Old: None GO Facilities: Current : 3% of seating to be Old: None accessible when seating is fixed Current : Clear opening between to floor. 850mm to 1000mm whether the entrance includes a gate, bollard, or other entrance design. 9

  10. 15 Easier Access Design Features Furniture Site   Benches in stations and designated shelters on Train and Delineated Pedestrian Bus platforms and Park and Ride and Kiss N Ride areas. crosswalks and pavement markings; Vertical Access  Designated accessible parking  Stairways with accessible features. spaces and loading areas;  Elevators  Sidewalks with curb cuts to  Elevated Accessible Rail Platform (Mini-Platform) accommodate barrier-free access; Building  Accessible Bus Bays and  Power door operators and door guards platform areas;  Accessible washrooms;  Increased illumination near  Accessible Floor grilles customer loading and waiting areas; Customer Service  Barrier-free ticket sales counters and accessible ticket booth audio communication systems;  Signage for Station Way finding;  Public Address System; 10
