Accessibility Advisory Committee March, 2014 Bhavana Nelliparambil Manager, Standards, PMPS, GO Capital Infrastructure 1
Accessibility at GO One of the guiding principles of the Design Requirement Manual and Static Signage Catalogue. Step free access to and from public areas and the accessible rail car. Equivalent access is integrated for those with special needs, that include: Mobility devices Hearing or sight impairments Elderly or ill Travel with children 2
Challenges Consistency in Application of Accessibility Standards Our stations all being built at different times Grandfathering of codes Different versions of standards and other considerations – Heritage etc,. Multiple capital projects Capital Condition Surveys Inventory where locations have standard variations We establish projects to address any gaps 3
Standard Development Process Design Development Identify Accessibility requirements at Design Brief Stage Design Technical design Quality Lessons learned reviews Assurance Initiate and Develop Standard Standard Established 4
Design Requirements Manual (DRM) PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS Governed by OBC, AODA and industry best practice Tailored to suit all customer needs and site conditions Design submissions are reviewed by Standards for quality assurance and technical input Stakeholder input on all Accessibility requirements and technical reviews. 5
Accessibility a Guiding Principle in the DRM Design Requirement Manual (DRM) section. Icon to identify accessible infrastructure elements throughout the design guidelines document. Accessibility features span all sections of the DRM. 6
Static Signage Catalogue Design criteria for static signs include best practices and compliance with OBC , AODA , FLSA (French Language Services Act) and corporate branding standards. Provisions are made in the design of stations and facilities to ensure that they all have an accessible route. Features on the accessible route are to meet the conditions listed above and be accompanied with appropriate signage. In general, accessible signs follow CSA, AODA guidelines; interior signs shall have a matt finish & exterior signs shall have a retro-reflective finish complete with reduced glare. 7
